Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Graphing and solving inequalities with Desmos

Content Area: Algebra 1
Grade Level(s): Highschool math 9th grade

Content Standard Addressed:

Represent and solve equations and inequalities graphically.

MGSE9-12.A.REI.12 Graph the solution set to a linear inequality in two variables.

Technology Standard Addressed:

Computational Thinker Students develop and employ strategies for understanding and solving problems in
ways that leverage the power of technological methods to develop and test solutions. Students: a. formulate
problem definitions suited for technology-assisted methods such as data analysis, abstract models and
algorithmic thinking in exploring and finding solutions. b. collect data or identify relevant data sets, use digital
tools to analyze them, and represent data in various ways to facilitate problem-solving and decision-making. c.
break problems into component parts, extract key information, and develop descriptive models to understand
complex systems or facilitate problem-solving. d. understand how automation works and use algorithmic
thinking to develop a sequence of steps to create and test automated solutions.

Selected Technology Tool: Desmos

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level):

Level 1: Awareness Level 2: Exploration Level 3: Infusion Level 4: Integration

Level 5: Expansion Level 6: Refinement

Lesson idea implementation: The teacher will provide the students with a variety of linear equations and
students will be required to interpret and graph the functions. Once students have graphed the equations
and labeled them in Desmos they would be provided with inequalities which then be required to graph
solution sets and translate the information into an algebraic expression.

The technology is integrated into the learning and is facilitated by the teacher. Students would be asked to
collaborate to assist in each others learning. The teacher would primarily serve as a resource for students
and help direct students to high quality, reliable sources of information.
