3/15/16 Beginner Theory- SA Lancaster

SWBAT:
o Understand and explain the significance of the top/bottom numbers of a time
signature
o Demonstrate an understanding of steady pulse by listening to various
musical excerpts and tapping a steady pulse
o Distinguish between strong and weak beats when listening to musical
excerpts
o Determine possible time signatures of musical excerpts by listening to
musical excerpts
o Compose rhythm-songs in various time signatures
o Perform rhythmic compositions (as groups)
o Combine rhythmic compositions with pitches and perform

Ear-training & o Review different time signatures-How many 5 minutes


Meter beats are in a measure of 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/8,
2/2etc.?
o Play multiple musical excerpts of different
styles with varying meters
o Have students tap the steady beat- eyes
closed
o Have students tap their foot on the important
beats- eyes closed
o Have students guess the meter (time
signature)
Rhythm o As a class, compose a 2 measure rhythm to fit 5 minutes
composition- into 4/4 time signature (using rests)
intro. o Practice the rhythm- counting and clapping
Rhythm o Separate into small groups 10 minutes
composition o Student groups compose 2 measure rhythms
(with rests) in various time signatures, using
rhythm cards (with bar lines)
o Student groups perform rhythms by counting
and clapping (if they have extra time, they can
add body percussion)
Class o As a class, compose a 2 measure rhythm to fit 10 minutes
composition into 3/4 time signature
o Practice the rhythm- counting and clapping
o Put the notes on the staff
o Speak note names with the correct rhythm
o Sing note names with the correct rhythm
