Conventional ultrasonic testing uses the pulse-echo technique.

transducer,
which often has a rectangular piezoelectric active element, fires a short-duration
pulse of ultrasound in a narrow beam into the metal and any echoes coming back
are received with the same transducer. The finite-width beam is a result of a
