Carmen Andrade Workshop on

Corrosion Control in Concrete Structures (C3S)

Friday, September 8, 2017 | ICSR Auditorium | IIT Madras, Chennai, India
www.rilem2017conference.org
ABOUT THE HONOUREE
Prof. Carmen Andrade worked as a scientist studying the durability of buildings, with
particular attention at the corrosion of steel in reinforced concrete at the Institute of
Construction Sciences Eduardo Torroja of the (CSIC) of Spain. She has authored
numerous papers and edited several books. She has supervised more than 30 PhD
theses. She has participated in and led various Standardization Committees and has
been Chairperson of several international organizations related to her specialty (UEAtc,
RILEM, WFTAO and Liaison Committee, which brings together associations: CIB,
FIB, IABSE, IASS, RILEM and ECCE). (R. N. Whitney Prize 2013 by NACE and
Robert LHermite Medal 1987 to young scientists from RILEM, Manuel Rocha of
the Presidency of Portugal and the ALCONPAT for the merits of the whole carrier).
She has been General Director of Technological Policy of the Ministry of Education
and Science and Advisor to the Secretary of State Universities in the Ministry of Science and Innovation, Spain.
In RILEM, she has chaired three Technical Committees related to electrochemical techniques and chloride attack.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
Many concrete structures are experiencing premature corrosion and not able to meet the design life. Almost 50%
of the concrete structures today experience a repair within about 10 years. About ~1.5 % of GDP is spent in
addressing the corrosion issues. There is a dire need to educate our engineers on how to assess and control
corrosion in concrete structures. If we do not take adequate measures now, then the future generation will face an
expensive challenge of repairing the large number of structures. This workshop is designed to help engineers to
learn the tips to minimize premature corrosion and extend the life of both the existing and new structures. Lectures
will have a blend of underlying scientific principles and research/practice-oriented viewpoints.

Workshop on
Limestone Calcined Clay Cements (LC3)
Monday, September 4, 2017| ICSR Auditorium | IIT Madras, Chennai, India
www.rilem2017conference.org
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
LC3 is a new type of cement, which is obtained by blending limestone and calcined clay along with
Portland cement in suitable proportion. The major advantage of LC3 is that it can reduce CO2 emissions
by up to 30%. The raw materials, namely limestone and clay (with 50 60% kaolinite content) are
available in abundant quantities. Also, the existing cement plants can easily be modified to manufacture
LC3 cements. This workshop includes lectures on the production, microstructure, strength, durability,
and the environmental and economic aspects of LC3 cements and concretes.

Luigia Binda Memorial Workshop on
NDT and Safety Assessment of RC and Masonry Structures
Friday, September 8, 2017 | Central Lecture Theatre | IIT Madras, Chennai, India
www.rilem2017conference.org
ABOUT THE HONOUREE
The workshop will be held in memory of Prof. Luigia Binda, Honorary Member of RILEM
who passed away on 3rd December 2016. Prof. Binda formerly was Full Professor at
Faculty of Architecture, Milan Polytechnic, Italy. Her primary interest was in preservation
of ancient buildings, particularly non-destructive evaluation, material decay in aggressive
environments, mechanical behaviour of brick and stone-masonry including long-term
behaviour and repair techniques. Prof. Binda was active in RILEM as a member and
chairperson of several Technical Committees, such as 216-SAM Strategies for the
assessment of historic masonry structures with NDT, 177-MDT Masonry durability and on-
site testing and 127-MS Masonry materials and structures. Prof. Binda was nominated as
RILEM Fellow in 1996, and Honorary RILEM Member in 2009. Prof. Bindas pioneering work in diagnostic
investigations for heritage masonry structures has left a lasting influence and inspiration in the field of
assessment of structures.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
The assessment of existing buildings is a common problem for the engineering industry, with the aim of
general condition assessment or specific problems, such as strength assessment or ageing mechanisms
(corrosion, effect of moisture, etc.). Several challenges exist in this domain, with pertinent questions such as
the following, requiring coherent answers. The workshop will be a platform for discussing them.
- How can comprehensive/consistent approach be developed for conclusions with certain reliability level?
- How and when can different investigation methods be combined?
- How can NDT results be processed to derive quantitative information on material properties?
- How can the number of tests (both non-destructive and destructive) be reduced as much as possible,
while controlling the reliability of assessment?
