Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) and who also made the training a
successful one.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.0 WHAT IS SIWES?

The students industrial work experience scheme (SIWES), as it is fondly called, is a

skilled training programme designed for student of technology, based on practical,

internal programme of higher institutions of learning, which includes polytechnics,

colleges of education and university in order to meet challenges ahead of schools.

The SIWES is also designed to expose in preparing student for industrial work

challenges, which they are likely to meet after school. it is equally an opportunity for the

employers to have a practical assessment of their prospective employees.

The scheme became fully effective in 1985. It has since then been managed by the

industrial trust fund (its) with the federal government of Nigeria.

1.1 BRIEF HISTORY ABOUT SIWES

SIWES became fully effective in 1985 and it has been managed by industrial training

fund and founded by the federal government of Nigeria in the year 1978/79 Academic

session polytechnic and other technological institution in Nigeria preparing their student

for Nigeria National Diploma (ND) programmes.

In December 1997, The Academic Board Committee on re- organization of industrial

Liaison and placement office submitted report.

Dr Lai Oso was appointed the first Director. The task of leadership was later

transferred to Mrs. O.Akinlua in 1999.

1.2 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF SIWES

The scheme is as follows:

a) To provide the students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge in real work

situation, thereby, bridging the gaps between college works and actual practical.

b) To enhance industrys satisfaction with certificate from institutions of learning.

c) To expose students to work method not taught in institutions and providing assess to

the production equipment not normally available in college environment.

d) To access the students interest and suitability for the occupation they have chosen.

e) To make use of transition from school to the labour market and to enhance the

students contact for later school.

f) To enlist and strengthen employers involvement in institutional activities in student,

for employment in all specializations.

CHAPTER TWO

2.0 PRESCRIPTION SHEET

Prescription sheet is a sheet given by a doctor or other license practitioners, on how to

dispense and use drug to patient.

These are the basic information on a prescription sheet:

1. Hospital information: This comprises of the hospital name and address.

2. Patient information: These consist of the name of all patient, age, sex and date.

3. Drug information: It consist of drug name and how to use it.

4. Doctor or prescribe information: The name of the doctor or prescribe, signature

and date.

2.1 CLASSIFICATION OF DRUGS

Drugs can be classified base on the function. This is the classification of some drugs

Anagestic: e.g. Paracetamol

Antibiotic: e.g. chloropheniramine

Antibacterial: e.g. ketoconazole

Antimalarial: e.g. Lumenfantrine

Antiseptic: e.g. hydrogen peroxideilodine

Antihistramin: Loratidin, Clemastine

2.2 DISPENSING OF DRUGS TO PATIENTS

Drug dispensing: is the packaging, labeling, record keeping and transfer of a

prescription drug to a patient or an intermediary who is responsible for administration

of the drug.

WHO IS A PATIENT: a patient is a person receiving or registered to receive medical

treatment.

Drugs that are being dispense include;

Vitacap, Nalidon plus

Folic acid

Amlodipine

Atenolol

Amoxiceillin e.t.c.

3.0 MEANING OF TABLET AND CAPSULE

Capsule: is in a powdered or jelly form which is enclosed in dissoluble plastic

container.

Tablet: is in a compressed powered solid form that is pressed tightly together when

manufactured.

Some drugs that are dispense are: Tab atenolol 500mg, Nalidon plus, Tab amlodipine,

Tab mefenamic acid, e.t.c

3.1 DIFFERENT BETWEEN INTRAVENOUS DRUGS AND

INTRAMUSCULAR DRUGS

As both I.V. and I.M. medications are ways of delivering a medication, they are

different in term of:

i. Route: Intravenous (I.V.) is forcing of a liquid directly into a vein or into a

person blood stream while intramuscular (I.M) is one made into the substance of

a muscle.

ii. Dosage and bioavailability: In terms of dosage for both intravenous and

intramuscular are usually similar and are generally lower than dose of

comparable oral medication. Intravenous drugs are taken directly into the blood

stream which make it 100% bioavailability while in case of intramuscular drugs

is injected into the muscle tissues which holds the drugs as a result of that

bioavailability may be some what less than 100% .

Intravenous drugs and intramuscular drugs that are dispense include;

I.M hydrocort

I.M hydralazine

I.M/IV oxytocin

I.M/IV pentazocine.

3.2 INFORMATION TO KNOW ABOUT DRUGS

1. Indication: This is a symptoms that suggest certain medical treatment is

necessary.

2. Dosage: This is the amount of medical drug or vitamin that should be taken at

one time or regularly during a period.

3. Side effect: This is any effect of a drug that is in addition to its intended effect

especially an effect that is harmful or unpleasant.

3.3 DOSAGE, SIDE EFFECT AND INDICATION OF DOXYCYCLINE

(DOXYCAP)

Indication: urinary treet infection

Dosage: 200mg on the first day follow by 100mg daily.

Side effect: diarrhea, nausea vomiting.

4.0 STOCK TAKING

Stock taking is the physical verification of quantities and condition of items held in

a store or a workshop. This is very important to know the amount of items present in

the store and other things like:

1. To know the drug remaining in the store

2. To know the drug expiring date

3. To ensure that your business is meeting the target

4. It is better to take stock at the end of the month to quickly detect drugs that

had expire

5. Help to improve your sock ordering process.

4.1 CLASSIFICATION OF DRUGS

ANALGESIC

Analgesic is any member of the group drugs used to achieve analgesia, analgesic

drugs act in various way on the peripheral central nervous system.

Example of analgesic drugs include: Diclofenac, Paracetamol, Morphine, Tramadol,

Ibuprofen.

Some analgesic drugs dispensed are: Cough syrup, Paracetamol, vasoprin, Atenolol,

Aldomet, Timoral, Thalazole, Nitrofuranton.

ANTI-MALARIA

Anti-malaria drugs are use or substance use in treatment or prevention of malaria.

Malaria medication include: Doxycycline, Primaquine, Choloroquine,

Lumefentrine.

Some anti-malaria drugs dispensed are: Combisunate, Amoxyl, Vitamin C,

Paracetamol, Vitamin E, and Diclofenac.

ANTI-HISTAMINE

Anti-histamine is any of certain compounds or medicines that neutralized or inhibit

the effect of histamine in the body.

Some anti-histamine drugs dispense for the week are: blood tonic, folic acid,

labetalol, vitamin B.

5.0 DRUGS AND THEIR USES

S/N DRUGS USES

1. Atenolol Use for chest pain (Angina), and high blood pressure

(hypertension).

2. Aspirin It is used to treat pains and reduce fever or

inflammation.

3. Amlodipine It is used to treat pains (Angina) and high blood

pressure.

4. Diclofenac It is used to treat pain and also to treat menstrual

cramp.

5. Augumentin (Anti-biotic) use to treat different infection caused by

bacteria.

5.1 ANTI-ASTHMATIC

Anti-asthmatic drugs are drugs use to control asthma in the body. Some anti-

asthmatic drug are: Asmatab, Ventolin, Sulphate, and Theophylline.

Drugs been dispense are: Lexotan, ferrous, Amlodipine, Metoclopramide, Vitamin

C, Vitamin E, Folic acid.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

6.1 CONCLUSION

The programme has enlightened me more on my course of study.

All honour and praise to Almighty Allah for protection.

6.2 RECOMMENDATION

The SIWES programme enlightened me more on the course of study and prepared

me on what to do and how to do it in future so as to gain more business ideal from

company attached to.
