Seminar in Music Education

Personal Reflections

I have compiled my personal reactions from each time period that we have studied

(except the era from 1983-2008 that is discussed in my presentation below, and 2008- present).

These reflections are meaningful to me because they show how my perceptions of teaching

have been impacted through studying each era in music education history.

The act of reflecting and examining the learning process have been extremely beneficial

to me. These processes have helped me learn in a more meaningful way, which has helped me

learn at a deeper and long-lasting level. This type of assessment/processfolio project has

evolved from Harvards Project Zero and the Arts Propel project. Gardners theory of

multiple intelligences has encouraged people to record and make visible their learning

process because everyone learns in unique ways. These reflections show how learning about

each era in music and educational history have impacted my mindset and approach to teaching.

I will continue to reflect throughout my career, because I found great value in learning in this

style, and I want to continue learning even after earning my Masters Degree (Ernst, Jellison).
