Step2:Authenticationandciphering.OnsuccessfulconnectionsetupwiththeRNC,theUEsendstheRRC
initialdirecttransfermessage.Thismessageisdestinedtothecorenetwork.However,theRNCprocessesthis
partially,addssomemoreinformationneededtosetupacallandmapittotheRANAPUEinitialmessage.and
sendsittothe3GMSC.TheinformationelementswithinthismessagecarryinformationonUEidentity,
location,andconnectionsetuprequirements.ThismessagealsoindicatestotheMSCandtheRNCthatanew
signalingrelationshipbetweentheUEandCNneedstobeestablished.

OnreceivingtheservicerequestfromtheUE,theMSCinitiatesthesecurityprocedures.Thisincludesthe
UEauthenticationandexchangeoftheencryptionkey.TheMSCsendsanauthenticationrequestwithinthe
RANAPdirecttransfermessage.TheRNCmapsandforwardstheauthenticationrequestmessageusingRRC
directtransfertoUE.TheUEexecutestheauthenticationalgorithmandsendstheresultbackinan
authenticationresponsemessagetotheMSC.AsshowninFigure512,thismessageiscarriedoveraspayload
intheRRCdirecttransferandRANAPdirecttransfermessages.TheRNCmerelyactsasarelay.Assuming
thattheUEissuccessfullyauthenticated,theMSCthensendsasecuritymodecommandtotheRNCindicating
thatthefurthertransactionsbetweentheUEandtheUTRANshouldbeencrypted.TheRNCinturnsendsan
RRCsecuritymodecommandmessagetoUE.Thesecuritymodecommandmessageconveystheencryption
algorithmandtheencryptionandintegritykeys.

Layer.TheALCAPproceduresarenotshowninthefigure.TheRNCinturnsetsuparadiobearerbetweenthe
RNCandtheUEbysendingaradiobearersetupmessage.Thismessagecontainstheinformationonbearer
allocation,i.e.,aradiobeareridentifier.TheUErespondswiththeradiobearersetupcompletemessage.The
RNCthensendsanRABassignmentresponsetotheMSC.Withthisproceduresuccessfullyexecuted,there
existsabearertotransportuseddatafromtheUEtotheMSC.

bysendinganIureleasecompletemessage.NowtheRNCtakeschargetocleartheRRCconnectionbysending
anRRCconnectionreleasemessagetotheUE.TheUEacknowledgeswithaconnectionreleasecomplete
message.
