PROBLEM SET No. 2

Deflections of Statically Determinate Beams
Conjugate Beam Method

After completing this problem set number 2, the student must be able to:
1. Convert the real beam into a conjugate beam with its corresponding M/EI loads and its
equivalent constraint (support)
2. Apply the two theorems of conjugate beam method to compute for the slope and deflection
of a determinate beam.

Instructions:
1. Draw M/EI diagram for the given real beam, if necessary draw the diagram by parts so as to
separate the effect of each applied load especially if there are combination of concentrated
load and uniform loads.

2. Determine the conjugate beam corresponding to the real beam.

3. Apply the M/EI diagram (from step 1) as the load on the conjugate beam. The positive
ordinates of the M/EI diagram are applied as upward loads on the conjugate beam and vice
versa.

4. Calculate the reactions at the support of the conjugate beam by the applying the equilibrium
equations and condition.

5. Determine the shear at those points on the conjugate beam where slopes (rotations) are
desired on the real beam. Determine the moment at those points on the conjugate beam
where deflections are desired on the real beam.

6. Use the theorems for the Conjugate Beam Method to determine the slope and deflection of
the beam.

Problems for Solution:
1. Determine the slope and deflection at point B of the beam shown.

2. Determine the slope and deflection at point A and B of the beam shown.

3. Determine the slope and deflection at point B and C of the beam shown if E = 200 GPa and I
= 1665 (106) mm4.

4. Determine the slope and deflection at point B and C of the beam shown. E = 200 GPa and I
= 600 (106) mm4.

5. Determine the smallest moment of interia I required for the beam shown, so that its
maximum deflection does not exceed the limit of 1/360 of the span. E = 200 GPa.
