Removal

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to Section 100-02.

2. Remove the front bumper cover. Refer to Section 501-19.

3. Remove the air cleaner. Refer to Section 303-12.

4. Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe. Refer to Section 303-12.

5. Remove the battery. Refer to Section 414-01.

6. Remove the transmission fluid cooler tube clips.

7. Remove the transmission fluid cooler tube bolt.

8. Remove the transmission fluid cooler return tube secondary latch.

9. Using the special tool, disconnect the transmission fluid cooler return tube.
Special Tool(s): Disconnect Tool, Transmission Cooler Line 307-569.

10. Disconnect the transmission fluid cooler inlet tube.

11. Remove both upper radiator support bracket bolts.

12. Remove the LH upper radiator support bracket.

13. Disconnect the cooling fan motor electrical connector.

14. Position aside the wiring harness.

15. Remove the transmission fluid cooler tube secondary latches.

16. Using the special tool, disconnect the transmission fluid cooler tubes.
Special Tool(s): Disconnect Tool, Transmission Cooler Line 307-569.

17. Remove the transmission fluid cooler inlet tube.

1. Position the radiator and condenser toward the engine.
2. Remove the transmission fluid cooler inlet tube.

18. Remove the transmission fluid cooler return tube.

1. Position the radiator and condenser toward the engine.
2. Remove the transmission fluid cooler return tube.

19. Remove and discard the transmission mounted transmission fluid cooler tube bolts.

20. Disconnect the transmission mounted transmission fluid cooler tubes at the thermal bypass valve.

21. Inspect the transmission case to be sure that the transmission mounted transmission fluid cooler tube seals
and backing rings were removed with the transmission mounted transmission fluid cooler tubes and are not
stuck in the transmission case. If the transmission mounted transmission fluid cooler tube seals or backing
rings are stuck in the transmission case, remove the seals and backing rings.

22. Remove the nuts and the thermal bypass valve.

Installation

1. Install the thermal bypass valve and nuts.

Tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).

2. NOTE: Inspect the transmission mounted transmission fluid cooler tube back ing rings and seals for damage
and install new back ing rings or seals if necessary.

Lubricate the transmission mounted transmission fluid cooler tube seals with transmission fluid and install the
backing rings and seals on the transmission mounted transmission fluid cooler tubes and install the
transmission fluid cooler tubes.
Material: Motorcraft MERCON LV Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-10-QLVC.
1. Seal (7D258)
2. Backing ring (7J324)
Tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).

3. Install the transmission mounted fluid cooler tube bolts.

Tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).

4. Install the transmission fluid cooler return tube.

1. Position the radiator and condenser toward the engine.
2. Install the transmission fluid cooler return tube.

5. Install the transmission fluid cooler inlet tube.

1. Position the radiator and condenser toward the engine.
2. Install the transmission fluid cooler inlet tube.

6. Connect the transmission fluid cooler tubes.

7. Install the transmission fluid cooler tube secondary latches.

8. Position back the wiring harness.

9. Connect the cooling fan motor electrical connector.

10. Install the LH upper radiator support bracket.

11. Install both upper radiator support bracket bolts.

Tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).

12. Connect the transmission fluid cooler inlet tube.

Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).

13. Connect the transmission fluid cooler return tube.

14. Install the transmission fluid cooler return tube secondary latch.

15. Install the transmission fluid cooler tube bolt.

Tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).

16. Install the transmission fluid cooler tube clips.

17. Install the battery. Refer to Section 414-01.

18. Install the air cleaner outlet pipe. Refer to Section 303-12.

19. Install the air cleaner. Refer to Section 303-12.

20. Install the front bumper cover. Refer to Section 501-19.

21. Check the transmission fluid level and add transmission fluid as necessary.
