8th Grade Math

Welcome to Putnam Middle School. We encourage you to do your best, stay organized, and take advantage of ALL of the
opportunities available to you. Be sure to read the school handbook thoroughly and adhere to the school regulations. It is
our goal as your math teacher to maintain a positive, enriching classroom where you will learn how to value and
communicate mathematics effectively. It is our pleasure to be working with you.

8th Grade Math will cover concepts such as Transformations, Congruence & Similarity, Exponents, Geometric Applications
of Exponents, Functions, Linear Functions, Linear Models & Tables, and Solving Systems of Equations.
Unit will be taught in the following order:
1. Transformation G1,G2,G3,G4
2. Congruence and Similarity G5
3. Exponents, Square/Cube Roots, and Scientific Notation EE1,EE2,EE3,EE4
4. Rational Numbers and Linear Equations in One Variable NS1, NS2, EE7
5. Pythagorean Theorem and Distance Formula G6,G7,G8, EE2 (Revisited)
6. Volume of Cylinders, Cones and Spheres G9
7. Functions and Relations F1,F2
8. Linear Functions and Models EE5, EE6, F3, F4, F5
9. Solving Systems of Equations EE8
10. Bivariate Data SP1, SP2, SP3, SP4
There are 28 math standards in 8th grade.

STUDENT SUPPLIES: 2 composition notebooks, pencils (mechanical preferred), eraser, paper, graph paper,
colored pencils (CLASS NEEDS but not required: Kleenex, hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes)
Please bring supplies to class every day.
Calculators are encouraged but not required I will have a classroom set. Sharing of calculators will result in a failing
An organized notebook is a necessity. It should contain this syllabus, class notes, handouts, homework, and extra

Practice Assignments/Quizzes/Homework: 40% Tests: 60%
No student will receive credit for answers on any paper that do not have the appropriate work to justify the answer
given. Any papers turned in with answers only will receive a failing grade.
All tests and quizzes will be kept on file in the classroom. They may be reviewed at any time.
Students who are absent from class will need to get notes from a peer or during Extended Learning Time.
Students who are absent from class for any reason (including School Sponsored Activities) are responsible for
obtaining and completing make-up work.
All graded assignments during the students absence must be completed before or after school at the convenience
of the teacher within the next five (5) school days.
Missed work may be made up during the Extended Learning Time or after school.
Work assigned before a students absence is due upon his/her return to class.
To be successful, students need to be in class. We will follow the Board of Education attendance policy outlined in the
Student Handbook.

Arriving on time is a valuable life skill. We will follow the tardy policy outlined in the Student Handbook.


Cell phones should not be out/in use during class, for any reason, unless permission is given by the teacher for electronics
to be used in the days lesson.

1. Come to class daily, on time and prepared with all materials.
2. Complete all work as assigned and participate in discussions/activities.
3. Stay on task (no grooming, food or drinks, non-essential conversations, or electronics).
4. Do your own work (IN PENCIL, please) and show all of your work.
