Design and steel fixing of slab

The critical slab selection of the 6 storeyed structure was 4m by 6 m wide. The critical slab
carries the maximum load(dead load) in the design process and is always selected for the
ultimate desing purposes.

From the analysis the slab Lx reinforcement-Y10 spaced @ 200mm and the Ly
reinforcement Y10 spaced @ 200mm.

The Torsion reinforcement at the corner of the slabs support detailed to design. The
minimum lap lengths adopted in the design and on site was 500mm in length.

The main tension bars are staggered and the 50% curtailed at 0.3L of the span.Provision of
stools/kicks between main reinforcement and distribution bars.

DESIGN AND DETAIL OF BEAM

Continous Beam.

The continous beam had 5 span lenghts.Shear loads from slab 0.75L distributed to the
beams where computed for the determination of the serviceability state and the ultimate
design.

The tension reinforcement obtained was 3Y20 Bars and the compression reinforcement
3Y16.At the support hogging bars provided 2Y16 spanning length.

From Elastic distribution of moments envelope and a reduction of 0.156 factor to obtain a
satisfactory design moment.Checks for shear and deflection were check to approve on the
reinforcement provided.Crack was also checked.

STRIP/FLASHING BEAM.

This is the beam size of the Slab depth. The beam acts as a balance in distributing the load
between the slab to the neighbouring main beams. The adopted beam breadth was 300mm
with provided reinforcement of 3Y20-T and 3Y20-B.Links provided @ 200mm c/c Y8.

AND REINFORCEMENT.

CANTILEVERED BEAM/UPSTAND BEAM.

The upstand Beam located at the balcony carried minimal load and transferred to the
Cantilevered beam. The cantilevered section of the slab had reinforcement extended back
beyond the section of the supporting beam.

COLUMNS.

CRITICAL COLUMN.

By trial and selection of considerable column section size,we came up with a 300 by
300mm column section. From the shear loads obtained from the beam computations,we
were able to come up with cumulative axial load obtained in each floor. In addition,we
determined column shear and moments effectively transmitted to the column bases.

With the moment and total axial load,a determination of reinforcement was computed at
each floor level. The lower floor had a reinforcement bar size bigger and it reduced as we
advanced to the upper levels.

Shear reinforcement of Y8 spaced at 175mm c/c was adopted and a lap length of 1000mm
was used to form a uniform bar transition.

At the beam column junction,a bond length of 3 is to be adhered on.Beam bars were fixed
so that they didnt overlap with the column bars.

FOUNDATION DESIGN AND CURTAILMENT

A considerable size of the foundation footing was adopted.Using the bearing pressure of
the soil,a determination of the depth of the base was selected. From the axial load, the
foundation reinforcement was computed.Checks for craking and shear were determined.
