Subject: Business Communication Course: MBA(PM) 2017-19

Duration: July 2017 December-2017 Subject code: HRES 7004

One Session: 90 Minutes

A. ABOUT THE COURSE:


Communication skill in a manager is one of the important skills, which a manager must possess to
perform his/her role(s) effectively in an organization. Since he/she deals with employees, and with
customers outside the organization, it is important that in an organization he should be well equipped
in terms of different aspects of business communication. The course therefore covers all constituents,
which will make a managers job easy to handle.

B. OBJECTIVE:
a) An understanding of the concept and purpose of communication in general and business
communication in particular.
b) Understanding the self- style of communication
c) Ability to give feedback
d) Developing skills of effective listening
e) Ability to use and review the language for 7cs
f) The skills of writing persuasive, routine and bad newsletters.
g) Ability to write reports
h) The ability to organize the information for clarity and interest.
i) The skills to perform well in interview
j) The ability to negotiate effectively

On completion of the course the students will be able to:
a. Describe the major theories, concepts, and research findings in the fields of business
communication
b. Demonstrate a clear understanding of business communication in organizational context.
c. Demonstrate effective application of business communication to diagnose and solve

Sessions: 2 (lectures of 1.5 hours each)

Total hours per week: 3 hours per week.

Internal Assessment: Marks 100 (shall be done based on the following 5 components):

a) Case studies: Each student will have to participate in the case study discussion. The case studies
are mentioned in the course plan. Students are required to read the case study before attending
the class and the group will have to submit the written analysis of the case as per the following
guidelines. For details kindly refer section L (30% weightage)

The basic structure should be as follows:


a. A cover page with your name, the case name, the date, the course name and number
b. 4-page maximum analysis that discusses the key strategic issue, alternatives,
recommendation, and implementation/action plan
c. 1-page financial analysis (in an appendix) whose results are included in the analysis
where necessary (but almost always in the recommendation and implementation/action
plan sections)
d. All work must be submitted in hard and soft copy as one integrated document ready to
be opened. Work submitted in multiple pieces will not be accepted. Please upload soft
copy on Black Board.

b) Assignments: Each student will have to submit the hard copy and upload a soft copy of the
assignment on Black Board. This project is based upon business communication application
questions. The assignment questions will be given by the course faculty and will cover the
aspects of business communication in business. Students are required to observe, analyze and
evaluate either the day to day life or a business setting etc.

c) Project ( individual)

Each student will submit a project based on business communication. Students having work experience
may develop assignment based on their experience. The situations would be such that it has business
implications based on communication.

The project will not qualify evaluated if the plagiarism were more than 5%.

d) Presentations: The presentations topics are mentioned in the course plan. Each group (max 5
members) is required to present its presentation as per the schedule. Each group is required to
make two presentations (one topic and one case study). For details, please refer section L

e) Self-Assessment/ Discussion Each student is required to complete the self-assessment


exercise/ discussion for each of the online session

f) Final Quiz: Each individual shall have to appear for the final quiz.

End -Sem Examination: 50% Weightage

End-Sem examination shall be of three hours duration. The examination paper shall have objective
& theory questions, short and case.

Passing Criterion: minimum 45% of the highest marks in the class

Student has to secure minimum 45% marks of the highest marks in the class scored by
a student in that subject (in that class/group class) individually in both the End-
Semester examination and Total Marks in order to pass in that paper.

Attendance

Students are required to have minimum attendance of 75% in each subject. Students with less than
said percentage shall NOT be allowed to appear in the end semester examination. The student
obtaining 100% attendance would be given 5% bonus marks for internal assessment.

Cell Phones and other Electronic Communication Devices: Cell phones are not permitted in
classes during Tests or the Mid/Final Examination. Such devices MUST be turned off in the class
room.

E-Mail and LMS: Each student in the class should have an e-mail id and a password to access the
LMS system regularly. Regularly, important information Date of conducting class tests, guest
lectures, syndicate sessions etc. to the class will be transmitted via e-mail/LMS. The best way to
arrange meetings with us or ask specific questions is by email and prior appointment. All the
assignments preferably should be uploaded on LMS. Various research papers/reference material will
be mailed/uploaded on LMS time to time.

Self-Assessment

practitioner in your chosen field(s); a professor(s); a friend or family member. Notes from this interview
will be included as an appendix (you will provide identification of those interviewed in the text).
Newspaper and/or professional journalSome career opportunities are advertised in the newspaper,
while others are published in professional journals.
The Internet also has a variety of online job listings and other documents that may be included.
Thus, most papers that are well-documented (gets the best grades) have anywhere from 6 to 12 sources.
Remember that the fewer sources there are, the less thorough the researcher has been

K. Instructions
a) All students will be divided in groups comprising of 3- 5 students in each.
b) Students are expected to read the concerned sessions contents in advance before
coming to the class.
c) The session will be made interactive through active participation from students. The
entire session will be conducted through question-answer, reflections, discussion,
current practices, examples, problem solving activities and presentations etc.
d) In the case study session, all students are expected to prepare their analysis and
answers/decisions in their respective groups.
e) All schedules/announcements must be strictly adhered to.
f) The complete syllabus would be covered for final quiz and one must be thoroughly
prepared to appear for the test and strictly appear on given time.
g) Hard copies of case analysis/Assignment will be accepted and checked only after
checking plagiarism.
h) Late entry (Max. 5 minutes from the class timing) in the class will not be allowed.
