The following is the actual cover letter I used to get my current job.

I had bee
n out of the teaching field for several years, so I had to be creative to prove
that I could do it. Hope it gives you some ideas!!

Dear Ms. Principal,

Please accept my resume for consideration for the position of Kindergarten teach
er. I received my education and certification in pre K - 6th from NY; and I have
submitted the required paperwork for Florida certification in Primary and Eleme
ntary Education. Although I have also sent in my employment application to the B
roward County Board of Education, I have not yet received my letter of eligibili
ty. I understand that the proper procedure would be to wait for this document, h
owever I am very excited about the prospect of teaching and simply could not wai
t to apply for posted vacancies. To that end, I have included with this resume a
ll of the information requested with the application so that you may view it.
After graduating from college in 1994, I moved to Indiana, where I taught Kinder
garten in a pre-school. Upon moving back to NY, I began substitute teaching. Bec
ause the financial rewards of substitute teaching were not enough to support mys
elf and full-time teaching positions were very difficult to obtain, I found it n
ecessary to find more lucrative employment in another field.
Although I ve not had a permanent position in education in several years, I ve never
stopped teaching. It is a part of everything I do. All that I learned through m
y education and experience has proven useful in each facet of my life. When trai
ning associates, I teach. While creating hands-on activities, helping with homew
ork, cooking, or going on trips with my step-children, I teach. When giving frie
nds and family advice on discipline, motivation, or developmentally appropriate
learning activities for their children, I teach. Teaching is not only what I do,
but it is who I am.
It is my belief that children must learn discipline, responsibility, and self-wo
rth in order to accomplish their goals and succeed in life. While planning lesso
ns, I try to create situations that will incorporate these positive messages alo
ng with teaching the facts and skills. I place much importance on combining new
approaches with proven techniques to produce a well-balanced learning environmen
t. My success comes from my ability to engage the children in several projects a
t once through learning centers, hands-on activities, and research projects that
teach many skills, while also including the proven traditional methods that giv
e the students the necessary proficiency in each area. By stimulating the studen
ts imaginations, excitement is created within the children, making them more open
to learning. Moreover, my organizational skills enable me to create an exciting
and motivating atmosphere, give quality time to each child, and complete requir
ed paperwork in a timely manner.
