EBOLA in the air!

Ebola virus disease (EVD), formerly known as Ebola

haemorrhagic fever, is a severe, often fatal illness in

humans. Ebola creates holes in blood vessels often

causing bleeding and shock. The first EVD outbreaks

occurred in remote villages in Central Africa.

SYMPTOMS of EBOLA
Humans are not infectious until they develop

symptoms. First symptoms are the sudden

onset of fever fatigue, muscle pain, headache,

and sore throat. This is followed by vomiting,

diarrhea and rash.

TRANSMISSION
Ebola is introduced into the human

population through close contact with the

blood, secretions, organs or other bodily

fluids of infected animals. This then spreads

through human-to-human transmission via

direct contact (through broken skin).

TREATMENT
Supportive care rehydration with oral or intravenous

treatment of specific symptoms improves survival.

There is yet no proven treatment available for EVD. For

now, only symptoms can be treated in hopes of keeping

people strong enough that their immune systems can

catch-up.
