6. Overall Reflection of SBE 2

Firstly, I went through my second time of the School Based Experience (SBE) for
five days starting from 18 August 2013 until 22 August 2013 at Sekolah Kebangsaan
Convent Father Barre, Sungai Petani. First of all the objective of second SBE is to
observe the application of theories in the teaching and learning process in schools,
observe the pedagogical application in the classroom and identify teachers ancillary
task in the classroom. All these objectives will help us to understand the students
different needs based on the learning theories that have been learned and at the same
time we can realize the importance of teachers profesional work ethics while assisting
the teacher in the classroom. I was responsible with a task to observe and record the
teaching and learning process based on the learning theories that have been identified.

I have been observed two different classes where English lesson took place. It
was a class if Standard 4 and 5. I experience a variety of application of learning theories
more during the class of Standard 5.

Firstly, the teacher applied the theory of cognitivist throughout the lesson of the
day. In my opinion, the teacher applied cognitivist theory as one of the main tool to
deliver a meaningful lesson to the students. She also recall the students about the
previous work which she asked them to complete. Besides that, she also asked the
students about the lesson of the day to ensure the students are on the right path of the
topic. For example, she asked the students that how many of them know about the
Mooncake Festival. It make students learned to organize their memory power. The
teacher also conducted the lesson with question and answer sessions. In this situation,
the students are encouraged to answer her question to gain more information of the
topic that have been learned. Some of the students are voluntarily rise up their hand to
answer her questions. It clearly show their intellectuality on the topic that they have
been learned. The students also apply and organize an important information of the
topic through their thinking process. As an educator, she also give attention to passive
students. She picked some of them and asked them to answer her question even
though they shy to do so. But they started to think and answer her question after the
teacher give some clues to them.

Secondly, the teacher approach also can be seen through the fast respond from
the teachers to greet her instead of doing their own work or playing. In my opinion, the
classical conditioning theory took place in this situation whereby the students stimulated
to pay attention to the teachers voice once she enter in the classroom. The students
also can predict the indirect meaning of her voice. Besides that, I also noted that the
application of behaviorism theory are used during the lesson. This can be seen when
the students started to jot down some exercises before the teacher instructed to do so
as soon she started writing it on the board. The students took their own advantage to
start the work because of the previous stimulus. On the other hand, the teacher also
walked around the class to ensure that the students were working on the latest
exercises.

Besides that, the teacher also apply operant conditioning theory. The teacher
aware that negative reinforcement will slow down the students work rather than positive
reinforcement. At the end of the lesson, this will end up with an effective product of the
students. She always used some positive words to praise her students such as well
done, excellent and very good. At last, the students engage well during the lesson
by taking their own efforts to raise their hands and answer the question that have been
asked by the teacher. This reflects the teachers thought that students will create a
targeted behavior among the students.

In addition, the students also were given a chance to exposed to humanism

theory. The students-centered theory worked well during the lesson. Even though this is
a tradisional ways of conveying a particular lesson in the classroom. The ways she
praised them clearly show an energetic role to keep the students interest on the lesson
that been taught by the teacher. Besides that, the students self-esteem level was high
when she often asked question based on the topic. The teacher also tried to keep the
environment of class quiet. She also asked one of the students who are on the duty to
clean up the class before she started the lesson. It shows that the teacher approach to
educate the students to create a conducive atmosphere in the classroom.
