DRIVING

ASSISTANCE SYSTEMS
Early recognition of Driving Maneuvers

All kinds of "assisted driving" features are starting to appear on mass-produced
cars: new car models park themselves into tight slots, keep a safe distance in
steady traffic, brake automatically to avoid a collision, and so on. Some
manufacturers are trying to go further and are working on autonomous driving,
i.e. offering higher and higher degree of driving automation. Machine intelligence
methods is one the key technologies that are making all that possible.

These driving systems are highly complex and involve subsystems that address
many different problems. A relevant one is the early recognition of driving
maneuvers. For example, the traffic scenes in highways with multiple lines are
usually complex to interpret because they involve multiple vehicles and evolve
quickly on time. A system able to accurately interpret these situations and able
to recognize the intended maneuvers of all surrounding vehicles is a mandatory
component in many driving assistance systems. Benefits include improvements
in the traffic safety, congestion avoiding, driving efficiency, passenger comfort
and free time for other activities instead of driving, etc.

Students are expected to develop machine-learning techniques to address the

problem of early recognition of driving maneuvers. For this task, students will
have the possibility of accessing to a very rich and high-level automotive data
(e.g. car speed, car acceleration, distance to surrounding vehicles, etc.) captured
on real traffic situations, provided by a premium car manufacturer.
