Thesis review of High School Visual Art Students Perception of

Creativity

Chapter 1 is the introduction of the topic which consists of an introduction. In this

introduction have present background of the study, problem statement, purpose of
the study, research question, conceptual framework with a theoretical foundation,
nature of the study, operational definitions, assumptions, scope and delimitations,
limitations, significance and lastly summary for chapter 1.

In this thesis that was written by Jacqueline Henson-Dacey with titled High
School Visual Art Students Perception of Creativity. According to Chua (2016), a
research problem should be practical, important, stating, the research target and
main variables and it should be stated clearly and precisely. In this chapter 1,
researcher more introduced about the perception of creativity. It focused on two main
elements such as a students description and perception of creativity and whether or
not they experienced a flow state. In the research problem, the researcher has
stated some issues that are related to study.

There are have too much theories that have been stated by researcher. In this
theory is about participant perception of creativity. For example in problem
statement, Csikszentmihalyis (1990) theory of flow is being proposed to advance a
theory for creativity. In this theory, the investigation was conducted to test this theory
on the experience level of the students' creativity. Without self-actualization students
would not actively reflect on their own creative potential.

The purpose of this study was to describe teenage art students perceptions
of their own creative experience, by analysing students descriptions of creativity
revealing a flow state. Next to explore whether a flow state was apparent during the
creative process for the Advanced Placement Studio Art students. According to
Prabhu, Sutton, & Sauser (2008) established through empirical research that
creativity is evident in every field of study and the research associated with creativity

transcended all boundaries in the educational arena. In this thesis, there are not
stated about main objective and it just focus the purpose of this study.

In this chapter 1, researcher has not provided complete information needed in

chapter 1 such as main objective. So it will make the reader cannot know more
clearly related to the objective. Sometimes the words that used by the researcher
makes me less understood and not clear because of confusing words. However, she
has made a summary in chapter1 that allows me to understand the meaning to be
conveyed. But, I have some comment about title because the title of this article is not
complete because it contains a variable or a relationship that can be measured. Title
given is too direct and less convenient

Chapter 2 is about literature review. This chapter included overview, defining

creativity, flow theory, aesthetics, cognitive structure, creative self-efficacy,
pedagogy and also summary for this chapter. In this chapter, researcher focuses on
critically examine current literature on visual arts pedagogy to include themes of
creativity and discourse to provide a window into how students experience their own
creativity.

The researchers also obtained information from the past research studies, the
various theories related to the topic of research. From what I have read in chapter 2,
the researcher did a good literature review. It is because in this chapter, she is doing
very detailed with regard to the perception of creativity. For example, according to
Byrge and Hansen (2009) discuss the importance inherent in creativity as a separate
discipline. They said that research and creativity have been described as the most
important human functioning and is associated with cognition. So from that I can see
that researcher is able to compare theories from various experts to be used in her
study and also has explained the topic variables in this research. According to
Harding (2010) creativity is an aspect that can lead to inspiration in creativity. For
him, creativity is something of a mystery at all times and very complex. To think
creative, more imaginative and someone is more likely to generate and unique
alternative solution too many complex challenges facing our world today. So the tone

of the researches is informative because he uses various theories related to opinions

from experts related to their perception of creativity.

In my opinion from chapter 2, I agreed with this statement because Im also

one of art students. So I think creativity is more important for students in learning. It
is because, creativity can make our self to think out of the box and more imagination
to solve any problem based on their own creativity. Without creativity, cannot find
new experiences and mystery in each of their learning in the classroom. Overall in
chapter 2, researcher do very good because she suggested that creativity was
characterized through emergent traits, such as self-actualization, attraction to
complexity, prolonged attention, aesthetic orientation, and interpretation.

Chapter 3 is about the Research Methodology which includes research design

and rationale, role of the researcher, setting, participants, instrumentation, data
collection, field journal, interview, data organization, data analysis, issues of
trustworthiness, credibility, transferability, dependability, conformability, ethical
procedures and lastly about summary.

In this research, the researcher has stated that she used three traditional
paradigms that have emerged as potential research strategies to address teenage
creativity. These are quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods. Quantitative and
qualitative can appear to be exact opposites; however they represent two different
ends of a continuum (Creswell, 2009, p. 3). Quantitative research focuses on testing
hypotheses to examine predictions whereas qualitative research focuses on
interpreting social interactions. The mixed methods paradigm draws on both of the
other two traditions, mixing qualitative and quantitative approaches as needed. So,
her use qualitative research to discuss with participates about their experiences with
creativity. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological research study was to
examine and to fill this existing gap in art education. According to Chua (2016)
quantitative or qualitative, it is a systematic discipline which is conducted to seek
answers to problems or questions.

Data collection that is used by the researcher based on three interviews for
three participants. The first interview was based on semistructured questions derived
from research in creativity and flow theory. For the second interview is using Think
Aloud technique where individuals are provided with an opportunity to say whatever
is on their minds while creating their artworks as a way to describe their creative
process. And for the third interview in this series was designed to focus on the
understanding of individualized experiences. So in my opinion, this way is very the
best because she used with different methods to interview the participant, so it can
show a different perception of creativity based on their perceptions.

In conclusion, I think this thesis will contribute important information to teacher

especially for art teachers to encourage or motivate the students to always be
creative and motivated in learning. Any teacher can take advantage of this article to
learn about the importance of creativity in education. For me, even though this article
is too long and many say that confusing, but each piece of content this consists of
very useful information for us to know the student perceptions and theories from
experts on creativity.
