a powerful tool for positive change, inspiring awareness, tolerance, and commit-
ment to social and environmental responsibility.

What is Ecotourism? 7
ecotourism: responsible travel to natural areas that
conserves the environment and improves the well-
being of local people (TIES, 1990)
Ecotourism Principles
• Minimize impact.
• Build environmental and cultural awareness and
respect.
• Provide positive experiences for both visitors and
hosts.
• Provide direct financial benefits for conservation.
• Provide financial benefits and empowerment for
local people.
• Raise sensitivity to host countries’ political, envi-
ronmental, and social climate.
Ecotourism Fund
Become an active supporter of ecotourism and its benefits by contributing
to TIES efforts in uniting conservation, communities and sustainable travel.
TIES utilizes the Ecotourism Funds to support the following priority areas
and projects.

Richard Denman
and the Tourism Company
I live in Herefordshire, in the little known border country
between England and Wales. A timeless area of woolly cattle,
orchards, cider and black and white cottages. Our ecotourism
comes from the birds, butterflies, bees and trees but is none
the worse for being small scale and domestic. It is a great
place from which to run The Tourism Company, together with
my two colleague directors (but they are based in London!).
We are a small consultancy specialising in tourism, and not to
be confused with our fellow TIES members from Canada who
trade under the same name.
Mainly we work for destinations, helping them plan for a sustainable tourism future.
Strategies, marketing plans, feasibility studies and research are our normal fare but we
also do a lot of global work on tourism policy and promoting good sustainability practice
amongst tourism enterprises.
My projects are essentially divided between three areas – the UK, Europe and developing
countries. This year we completed the cycling tourism strategy for Wales, which is typical
of our UK work. It was about anticipating where the market for mountain biking and cycle
touring is going and how the Welsh forests, trails and rural communities can benefit more
from the opportunities.
My European experience started in Eastern Europe after the changes in the early nineties.
Now I am closely involved with the Sustainable Tourism Charter for Europe’s national parks
and protected areas. I think this is a great initiative as it requires parks to work together
with their local business and conservation interests to create good sustainable destinations.
Through the Charter we have been able to point out what they need to do better – often in
the areas of stronger partnerships, better interpretation and provision for car free holidays.
There are now over 80 Charter Parks and they have formed their own network.
I started to become active globally and in developing countries around 2002, when I
produced the Guidelines for Community-based Ecotourism for WWF and got very involved
with the Global Ecotourism Summit in Quebec. I have continued to work closely with the
World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), especially on their tourism and poverty alleviation
programme. As well as addressing policy issues, this has involved a number of missions in
Asia and Africa to identify projects. An example was work with the Konso – a tribe in the
south of Ethiopia which was seeing many visitors to their amazing enclosed villages but
receiving little material benefit from them. A far cry from cycling in Wales – yet somehow
the whole process of relating places to markets, or more meaningfully visitors to hosts,
throws up similar issues across the world. It’s certainly a challenge but one I have been
delighted and privileged to accept.

“Green-Washing”
“Eco” is a fashionable label used widely in the tourism industry. It sounds appealing,

Five Easy Steps:
4. Ask questions: Let tour operators/hotels know that you are a re-
sponsible consumer. Before you book, ask about their social and envi-
ronmental policies. For instance - What is your environmental policy?
What percentage of your employees are local citizens? Do you sup-
port any projects to benefit the local community?
Flying Responsibly
Your flight can be the most polluting aspect of your travel. It is estimat-
ed that air traffic accounts for 10% of greenhouse gases worldwide.

I
t is the basic principles that differentiate
ecolodges from traditional nature lodges and
hotels. The design of an ecolodge and the
activities provided within the facility should en-
courage close interaction with the natural and
cultural environment and have an atmosphere
that is appropriate to the site’s specific setting.
It is this metaphysical ‘sense of place’ that is one
of the key ingredients in distinguishing ecolodges
from traditional hotels. Location and resource
protection of the Ecolodge operational environ-
ment is critical to its successful performance.
Within these natural environments, what is im-
portant for an Ecolodges general atmosphere is
the sense of “isolation” and “wilderness”, and of being away from the impact of modern
civilization.
The activities provided in the Ecolodge are usually based on sensory experience with
the natural and cultural resources of the area to enhance the visitor’s appreciation and
to support the conservation of these resources. The general atmosphere of Ecolodges is
characterized by their friendly, relaxed, flexible and educational environment. The design
of an Ecolodge and the activities provided within the facility should then encourage close
interaction with the natural environment. However, each Ecolodge must enjoy an atmo-
sphere that is appropriate to the site’s specific setting.
Additionally, incorporating the local cultural attractions is the key to the success of an
ecolodge development. It is in those ecosystems where the indigenous peoples inhabit
that opportunities exist to involve them in more than just demonstrating traditional skills
and customs. There are significant opportunities in ensuring that they have an economic
stake in management in order to use conservation as a tool to bring marginal economic
groups into mainstream economic development.
In respect of local cultural traditions, for example in Islamic regions, there is a need to
design ecolodges with a more gradual transition from public through semi-public & semi-
private to private. Design layouts and details should conform to Islamic cultural tradi-
tions. For example, in consideration of a majority of the guests at the desert ecolodges
in Oman, Egypt, orientation to Mecca should be built into the various elements of the
ecolodge. Indigenous design styles (Bedouin, Nubian) should also be respected. Islamic
attitudes to the family etc. should also be respected and therefore spatial privacy is an
important concept for an Islamic Desert Ecolodge. Local appreciation of the desert, its
beauty and its wildlife must be considered when planning a desert ecolodge.
Financial sustainability is crucial as one cannot conserve nature or help local communi-
ties if there are no profits made by the lodge. The ecolodge must be run as a business
for it to be successful.

piece of Paradise called “Strawberry Fields Together!”.
Tours, Horseback Riding,
In the early 1970’s it became a very popular camping
Scuba Diving/Snorkeling, and cottage get-away. Named after the popular Beatles
Hiking song, ”Strawberry Fields Forever,” it drew people from
all over the world seeking its “irie” feeling. After 20
years of operation under “Sonrise Beach Retreat,” we
proudly return to the original name... Now that unique feeling of peace, beauty, and
adventure in our friendly community is back, come and enjoy nature at her best! Situ-
ated at the end of a road that turns into miles of coastal trails, empty beaches, hidden
waterfalls, and old Colonial Ruins, we offer adventure tours with your choice of ATV’s,
horseback riding, hiking, snorkeling, fishing, or boat excursions to these spectacular
spots.

since I was young. I’ve been fortunate to have
visited over 50 countries and have explored the
Resort Management, Event cultural diversity of 5 continents. My experiences
Planning/Management, living, studying and working in Central and South
Photography/Videography America have enriched not only my language

studying at Centro Internacional para el Desarrollo Humano, I began to learn
about the principles of ecotourism, both in the classroom and in the field. Cur-
