Receiving Drill 1 Alternating Targets
Written Description: Split team up into partners of comparable skill with one soccer ball per group.
Send each pair to a pair of cones set up about 5 yards apart from each other. One partner stands
between the two cones facing their partner who will take the soccer ball and stand about 7 yards
away from them. The partner with the ball with roll the ball at one of the two cones on either side of
their partner. The partner must stop the ball before it hits the cone or crosses the line between the
cones and control it back to the middle before passing back to their partner. Have partners switch
after every 10 serves.
Progression: Slow rolls on the ground -> varying speed and trajectory -> introduce pressure

Receiving Drill II Turning with the Ball
Written description: Form groups of three with one soccer ball for each group. Position each group at
a set of cones that are at least 5 yards apart. Two partners will stand by each cone as illustrated with
the remaining player between the cones. One of the partners at the cones will take the ball to start
the drill. Player A will push pass to central player B, who controls the ball, turns, and passes to player
C. Player C returns the pass to central player B who turns again and so on. Have the central player
turn 10 times before switching with an outside player.
Progression: Start slow to get used to turning with the ball -> Increase pace and go for duration (1
minute) to incorporate fitness -> competition to see who can get the most turns in 1 minute

Written Description: Split team into 5 equal groups and spread them evenly across the 18-yard box.
Instruct the first player to stay and the rest to move back a minimum of 7 yards. Give a ball to the first
player in each line that has moved back. The player with the ball will then pass to the forward player
who will turn with the ball and try for a goal. After shooting, the shooter will become a shagger and
the previous shagger can take their place in the back of the line the shooter shot from. After rotating
through several times, add in a defender who runs in at the attacker from the goal line.
Progression: Slow and controlled, two-timers, add defensive pressure

been completed, switch defenders and start again. After everyone has defended once, add a second
defender to create a 4v2 and repeat the drill.
