Article 1: Experts Discuss How to Find - and Keep - Teachers of Color June 2, 2017 Education Policy neaToday
http://neatoday.org/2017/06/02/experts-discuss-teacher-diversity/
One of the assignments this week in the Human Resources Administration class was to research and find strategies to help with recruitment and hiring of teachers. One of the issues that all
school systems are facing is the ability to recruit minority teachers. I decided to read this articles to see about some suggestions to add to my paper. According to the article, teachers of
color are leaving the profession more than white teachers are because of the working conditions. In lower income schools, there are not many resources for teaching and the buildings need
improvement. Without improvement in these areas, more teachers will leave and the money to recruit teachers is wasted. When some black, male teachers were interviewed, they shared
that their ideas were not always valued by white educators and they were asked to help to discipline the students of color. A professor at the University of Denver created a program that
would introduce high school students to a possible career as a teacher. Many lower income students have never had a teacher of color, so they do not know they can even become a
teacher. Through this program, students can earn credits to become a paraeducator and work to financially afford becoming a teacher. Through programs such as the one in Denver and
the Teacher Leadership Program, many teachers of color are learning how to be leaders and help to improve the working conditions of many schools. As I read this article, I really didn't
realize that some students never even consider being a teacher because they do not see teachers that look like them. I also understand the financial burden that college costs can place on
students. Unfortunately, students who grow up in an area that has high poverty makes it difficult for these students to then put themselves through school. I know that my principal is
always looking to bring more diversity to our school, but there are very few candidates out there for him to interview. Maybe programs that reach students while they are in high school
could help.
