Domain B Justification Paper 2

Abstract

The following paper is a justification for the artifacts included within my Professional

Development Quest Portfolio for Domain B: Assessing Student Learning. Included within this

justification is a discussion of TPEs 2 and 3 within Domain B. For the three artifacts included

within my PDQP, I have included a discussion for each artifact-supporting fulfillment of Domain

B.
Domain B Justification Paper 3

Domain B (Assessing Student Learning) within the California Teaching Performance

Expectations highlights TPEs 2 and 3.

TPE 3 (Monitoring Student Learning During Instruction) requires teaching candidates to

be able to monitor student learning and achievement of learning objectives within a lesson/unit

through both formal and informal means. (Commission on Teacher Credentialing) Teachers must

be able to design and implement appropriate assessments to analyze student learning and obtain

the necessary information to act upon and make adjustments and provide differentiation to

students. (Commission on Teacher Credentialing)

TPE 3 (Interpretation and Use of Assessments) requires teaching candidates to use a

variety of informal and formal, along with formative and summative assessments in the

classroom to determine student progress and achievement of the academic learning goals adopted

from state content standards. (Commission on Teacher Credentialing) With the evidence

collected from assessments, teaching candidates must then be able to understand how to use and

interpret information to provide students with effective instruction along with explain to students

and families their achievements, strengths, and needs within the classroom. (Commission on

Teacher Credentialing)

Artifact 1 is a rubric provided to students for the development of their essay on the Maya.

Students are provided with this rubric to allow for understanding of performance expectations. I

chose to include this rube as artifact in my PDQP in order to demonstrate my competencies in

providing assessment to students. With this rubric, students are provided the opportunity to

understand how they are going to be assessed within a given assignment along with the ability to

assess their own performance while completing the assignment. Within TPE 3, teaching

candidates are expected to be able to provide feedback and explain strengths and weaknesses to

both students and their families and with this developed rubric, it meets the expectations

established within this domain.

Artifact 2 is a developed assessment plan for a Fall of the Roman Empire unit including

assessment materials and rationale. I chose to include this artifact in my PDQP to demonstrate

my competencies in assessment planning and implementation. Within this assessment plan, I

have developed an assessment plan on how and why I am going to give this assessment along

with a discussion of how it aligns with state adopted content standards. As stipulated in Domain

B, teaching candidates are required to be able to develop and implement assessments to assess

student learning and progress toward learning objectives and with the assessment plan provided

as an artifact, I have further demonstrated my competencies within this domain.

Artifact 3 included is an example of student work from an assessment given in a West

Africa unit including score and teacher feedback. This artifact is included within my PDQP in

order to further support and demonstrate my competencies as a professional educator in

assessing and providing feedback to students including proving an example of student work.

Within Domain B, my competencies within TPEs 2 and 3 are further demonstrated through this

artifact as I demonstrate my ability to monitor student learning and interpret and use an

assessment as a professional educator.
