Optical system performance of large-scale photonic integrated circuits

. Introduction
In the past decade, optical transport networks have seen a greater than hundred-
fold increase in typical traffic demand as well as bandwidth cost reductions
approaching 98%. These have been enabled by innovation in optical transport
technologies, most notably the development of Wavelength Division Multiplexing
(WDM) and Optical Amplifier technologies [1].
