Module 5

Problem 1
A masonry dam shown is subjected to water pressure as shown. Assuming a 70% hydrostatic uplift pressure at the heel to full at
the toe, find the minimum width, B of the dam so as to prevent tension underneath the dam foundation.

Problem 2
The figure shown below is a section of a masonry dam resting on pervious foundation and is subjected to water pressure as
shown. Find Ry.

Problem 3
A block of wood 0.20 m thick is floating in sea water. the specific gravity of wood is 0.65 while that of seawater is 1.03. find the
minimum area of a block which will support a man weighing 80 kg.
Ans. 1.05 square meter

Problem 4
A cube 2.2 feet on an edge has its lower half of s.g. = 1.6 and upper half of s.g. = 0.7. it rests in a two-layer fluid, with lower s.g.
= 1.4 and upper s.g. = 0.8. determine the height h of the top of the cube above the interface. See the figure.
Ans; h=0.917 ft
Problem 5
A wooden spherical ball with specific gravity of 0.42 and a diameter of 300 mm is dropped from a height of 4.3 m above the
surface of water in a pool of unknown depth. The ball barely touched the bottom of the pool before it began to float.
Determine the depth of the pool.
Ans; 3.11 m

Problem 6
A cylindrical bouy 600 mm in diameter and 1.8 m high weighs 205 kg. it is moored in salt water to a 12 m length of chain
weighing 12 kg per m of its length. At high tide, the height of bouy protruding above water surface is 0.84. what could be the
length of protusion of the bouy if the tide dropped 2.1 m? density of steel is 7790 kg/m3. Use density of water =1000 kg/m3
Ans; 0.91 m

Problem 7
A solid wood cylinder of specific gravity 0.6 is 600 mm in diameter and 1200 mm high. If placed vertically in oil ( s.p. = 0.85),
would it be stable?

Problem 8
A rectangular scow 9 m wide, 15 m long, and 3.6 m high has a draft in sea water of 2.4 m. its center of gravity is 2.7 m above the
bottom of the scow. Determine the following.
a.) the initial metacentric height,
b.) the righting or overturning moment when the scow tilts until one side is just at the point of submergence.

Problem 9
A wooden barge of rectangular cross section is 8 m wide, 4 m high, and 16 m long. It is transporting in seawater (s=1.03) a total
load of 1500 kN including its own weight and cargo. If a weight of 75 kN (included in the 1500-kN) is shifted a distance of 2.5 m
to one side, it will cause the barge to go down 450 mm in the wedge of immersion and also rise 450 mm in the corresponding
wedge of emersion. The barge floats vertically (on an even keel) before the shifting of the weight compute how far above the
waterline is the center of gravity of the loaded barge.
m2
