Undesirable Behavior Targeted: Disruptive Group Work
1. Not staying with assigned group 2. Not talking at the assigned voice level 3. Not contributing to the group task 4. Not actively listening to all group members When students do not work productively, and appropriately within their assigned groups this can interfere with their learning and the learning of other classmates. The above behaviors take students out of group discussions, distract other groups, and discourage group cooperation. Desirable (expected) Behavior Targeted: Productive Group Work The desired behavior looks like: 1. Staying with assigned group 2. Talking with a level 2 voice level (Table Talk) 3. Contributing to the group task 4. Actively listening to all group members Types of Positive Reinforcements - Reinforced when & how? 1. Immediate R+: Footprints given to students who are following the expected behaviors 2. Ongoing R+: The mountain hiker will move up and down Plot Mountain: 45 footprints = inch 3. Overall R+: Class Write-In: the students will work on creating an imaginative story with a plot to be published! The immediate reinforcement will be earned and given while I monitor group tasks. At the end of the school day, the students will count their footprints, calculate how many inches the hiker moves, and move the hiker the appropriate amount. The overall reward will be given during class as it relates to the 4th grade TEKS. Interactive Learning Activity TEKS 4th Grade: (16) Writing/Literary Texts. Students write literary texts to express their ideas and feelings about real or imagined people, events, and ideas. Students are expected to: (A) Write imaginative stories that build the plot to a climax and contain details about the characters and setting; Topic: Writing/Literary Texts When the students have reached their goal the class will have a writers workshop. The room will be turned into Ms. Harris Publishing Co. The students will be able to implement flexible seating arrangements; they will have access to mentor texts, and different writing mediums. At the beginning of the writers workshop, the students will participate in a whole-class brainstorming session where they will share ideas about setting, plot, genre, types of characters etc. The students will then begin to form their story ideas and begin writing. Throughout the writers workshop, I will lead the students through brain breaks and other activities to keep the creativity flowing. The students will be able to have their finished work published through StudentTreasures.com. Explain HOW you will Teach the Desired Behaviors: In order to teach the desired behavior, I will model the behaviors, have the students model the behaviors periodically throughout the plan. I will also review the expected behaviors before every group assignment. We will practice voice level, cooperating, and contributing. Explain HOW you will Teach the Plan: The plan will be taught as if it were an adventure or a story in order to make it exciting since we will be working towards creating an imaginative story with a plot. The students will learn what the footprints mean, how to earn them, how many they need to move the hiker, and the overall reinforcement. Provide Options: This plan can be used in a math setting with an overall reinforcement that relates to measurement, perimeter, or area. This structure can be used in any subject with minor tweaking. The desired behaviors can also be changed to fit any undesirable behavior such as talking out of turn.
