1 a) Distinguish between Newtonian fluid and non-Newtonian fluid.


b) Calculate the specific weight and specific mass of a liquid having a volume of 4000 liters and
weighing 3000Kg.
c) Define Pascals law.
d) Define buoyancy and centre of buoyancy.
e) Define metacenter and metacentric height.
f) Define gauge pressure and absolute pressure.
g) Define stream function and velocity potential function.
h) With a simple sketch write the Bernoullis equation for the loss of energy between two points.
i) Define Reynolds number (RN).
j) Define impulse momentum equation. 2 10

2 a) Define the following fluid properties and state their units.


i) Mass density ii) Viscosity iii) Vapour pressure 8
b) Define surface tension. Derive the expression for surface tension on liquid droplet. 7

c) The equation of velocity is u=3y-y2, where u is the velocity in m/sec at a point y from the
plate measured perpendicularly. Determine the shear stress i) At the boundary
ii) At a point 20 cms from the boundary. Take viscosity = 8.6 poise. 5

3 a) State and prove hydrostatic law. 6


b) Explain with sketches all the conditions of equilibrium of floating bodies. 6
c) A triangular gate of base width 2m and height 4 m is installed in oil with its plane making an
angle of 45 with the free surface of oil. Determine the hydrostatic pressure force and the
position of centre of pressure, when the base of the triangle lies 5 m below the free surface of
oil and is nearer. Take specific gravity of oil is 0.85. 8

4 a) Explain; i) Steady and unsteady flow


ii) Rotational and irrotational flow
iii) compressible and incompressible flows. 6
b) Velocity vector in a fluid flow is given by (6xt+yz2)i + (3t+xy2)j + (xy-2xyz-6tz)k
i) Verify whether continuity equation satisfied
ii) Find the acceleration vector of fluid at point (1,1,1) at time t=1. 8

c) Steam function for a 2D flow is given by =2xy. Calculate the velocity at the point (1,2).
Find also its velocity potential function . 6
5 a) Define hydraulic coefficients Cd, Cc, and Cv. 6
b) Derive the Eulers equation of motion along a streamline. 8
c) A vertical venturimeter has an area ratio 5. It has throat section diameter 10cm, when oil of
specific gravity 0.8 flows through if the mercury differential gauge indicates a difference of
height of 12cm. Find the discharge through the venturimeter. Take C d=0.98 and the oil flow
upwards. 6

6 a) Derive the loss of head due to friction in pipe using Dascys Weisbach equation. 6
b) Find the head lost due to friction in pipe using 25cm diameter and length 60m through which
water is flowing at a velocity of 3m/s using;
i) Dascys equation ii) Chezys equation for which C=55.
Take kinematic viscosity as 0.01 stoke. 6
c) A fluid of density and viscosity , flows at an average velocity V, through a circular pipe of
diameter D. Show by dimensional analysis, that the shear stress at the pipe wall will be given
