Sleeping in a Ryokan
In Japan there are some hotels called ryokan. There
is a door, and there is usually a small table. The rooms
dont have any carpets there are mats called tatami
on the floor. The bed is in a cupboard, and there
arent any chairs. Sometimes there are some things
to make some tea. There isnt a bathroom. You share
a bathroom with the other guests outside the room.
There isnt a TV in the room some ryokan have TVs
and chairs outside the rooms for people to use. The
food is often excellent. Guests eat breakfast and dinner
in their rooms. Ryokan arent usually in big cities. There
arent any swimming pools or tennis courts. Guests
can relax in hot spring baths, and enjoy the lovely
countryside.

Swim Girl, Swim!


On 6 August 1926, Gertrude Ederle, a famous
American swimmer, became the first woman to swim
the English Channel. In 1924, Ederle won a gold medal
in the Olympic Games when she was only 17 years old.
She swam across the English Channel more than two
years later.
She started in France at 7.05 on the morning of
6 August. The swim took 14 hours and 30 minutes. The
weather was bad, with wind and rain. The first person
to meet her on the English coast was an officer who
asked for her passport!
When she got home, she became the star in a movie
called Swim Girl, Swim and she also met the President
of the United States.
