Medisys corp. was founded with the entrepreneurial culture spirit and this is its biggest strength.
It is small yet profitable company. Recently Medisys started to face many problems within the
firm as well as project and product level of IntensCare. Some of the major problems that medisys
had were strict deadlines for the project, rising competition was also one of the major business
threat, there was also a rise in the conflict amongst the teams, and the modular design was also
the topic of debate for the company. Moreover the software for IntensCare was outsourced and
the company was not satisfied by the quality of the software. The project and the organization
was facing many multiple problems at the same time and as a Marketing manager Valerie Merz
was accountable for the profit/loss of the company so he had to take some steps to come over the
current situation they are facing.
The company needs to focus on communication, conflict management between the team
members to regain the trust of each other and start working as a healthy cross-functional team as
they use to do it before. The company also needs to analyze and establish the business impact of
the project and align the project outcome with the business goals and strategy. It is important of
any organization to gain an upgrade with every project they accomplish and in this case that
could be matching their competitors to remain a major player in the market. The other major
reason was lack of leadership that has to be focused upon.
Valarie Merz should approach the top management and have a meeting with them to explain the
severity of the situation the organization is facing. Valarie should also volunteer to look into the
business impact of the project and work together with the steering committee and the project
sponsors maintain the harmony and the communication. Valarie should convince them to keep
their personal interest aside and work for the company as it will ultimately impact them if the
company suffers. This way Valarie could ensure the top management to be on the same page and
be proactive towards the solution. They should also focus on team communication and
engagement. At this point motivating the team and providing them a reason to work towards a
common goal keeping aside personal interest and conflicts it extremely important. The trust
amongst the team needs to be rebuild for the team to be able to perform well. Team engagements
in the meeting and allowing every team member to have a say is the key solution to this problem.
All the team members and the authorities must take a personality test like MBTI or identifying
which bird they are in order to understand each other better. It is extremely important for Valarie
to rise as a leader and explain the team the severity of the situation. Leading the team towards
working for the common goal and team engagement is extremely good solution for resolving
conflicts and trust issues within the teams and the other employees.
After conflict management and leadership the most important factor is communication. The
communication between the teams, project manager and other stakeholders is extremely crucial.
The team needs to update the project progress and milestones to the project manager and the
higher authorities. They should have a stand-up meetings to ensure the fluent informal
communication. Informal communication further ensures the power to everyone for their opinion
and this brings more ideas and at the same time builds trust and confidence of the team. There
should be open communication across the company and will improve transparency. Valarie
should also ensure that the team have adequate resources and support.
The product had a bad engineering and it certainly requires more resources than it currently has.
The project team members were working in the matrix organization style and had to work for
departments and the project. This increased their stress and added chaos due to the dual reporting
nature of matrix. The project team should focus on the project and department work could be
done by adding some extra resource. Also, the project will also need extra resources if they plan
to deliver the project within deadline and keeping the modular design. Modular design would
certainly give the company a competitive edge so it is highly recommended. The team has
talented people and is cross-functional, it is capable of delivering the project on time with some
additional resources for the less important tasks, motivation and top management support. The
parallel development adopted is also saving time and providing the team a good pace.
Lastly, they need to look into the outsourced software that they are experiencing problems with.
They should ask for the better version of the software as described in the scope and should
pressurize the company they outsourced the software. It is not possible for them to develop the
software starting from zero all by themselves. Medisys have to describe the software
development team and the project manager exactly the requirements and the scope once again
and should ask for regular updates.
