Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani dedicated Indias first laser technology-based advanced AVMS
RTO check-post at Shamlaji
i. Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani launched Indias first laser technology-based advanced
AVMS RTO check-post and also laid foundation stones of various developmental works worth Rs
30 crore at Shamlaji of Aravalli district in Gujarat.
ii. This new check-post is equipped with advanced ray technology with a cost of Rs 4.72 crore.
iii. All the check-posts in the state will be made advanced, automatic and transparent with a cost
of Rs. 35 crore during next financial year.
iv. The income from this check posts will be used for welfare of poor, deprived and last-person
of the state.

Trial run of Indias first 700 MW PHWR expected in 2017


i. The trial run of Indias first 700 MW Pressurized Heavy
Water Reactor(PHWR) at Kakrapar, Gujarat, is expected to take placein middle of 2017.
ii. Indias atomic power plant operator NPCIL is building four 700 MW PHWRs, two
each at Kakrapar Atomic Power Station (KAPS) in Gujarat and Rajasthan Atomic Power
Station (RAPS) in Rajasthan.
iii. The construction of two 700 MW PHWRs at KAPS is at an advanced stage. The commissioning
activities of the first unit have begun and the trial run of the first unit is expected to happen
during the middle of 2017.

Japan to Help in Developing Chennai, Ahmedabad and Varanasi Smart Cities


i. Japans Ambassador to India Mr.KenjiHiramatsu, informed about Japans intention to
help India with the development of Chennai, Ahmedabad and Varanasi as smart cities.
ii. The decision was announced by the Mr.Kenji during a meeting with Minister of Urban
Development Shri M.Venkaiah Naidu on January 5, 2017.

Gujarat Government Launches Student Startup and Innovation Policy


i. The Gujarat government has introduced Indias first Student Startup and Innovation
Policy to provide financial support to enable the students in developing their innovative ideas
ii. The Student Startup and Innovation Policy has been developed under the aegis of Education
Department. The policy will support student-led startups& innovations and create
an Innovation and Pre-incubation Ecosystem Support (IPIES) across all universities of the

state.
iii. The Gujarat government would provide Rs 200 crore as State Innovation Fund for the next
five years, of which Rs 100 crore will be allocated by the state government and the remaining
amount will be created by internal sources, like university funds and CSR funds.

2017 International Kite festival begins at Ahmedabad


i. A 7 day International Kite Festival is inaugurated by Gujarat Governor, OP
Kohli and CM Vijay Rupani at the Sabarmati riverfront, Ahmedabad on January 8, 2017
ii. International Kite festival includes a theme pavilion based on Tourist Destinations of
Gujarat, kite workshop, adventure games for kids, craft stalls to display the local art and food
stalls with local delicacies for the visitors.

8th Edition of Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors Summit 2017 Concluded in Gandhinagar
Prime Minister NarendraModi was on a two day visit to Gujarat from January 9-10, 2017 to
inaugurate the eighth edition of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors Summit
2017 at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, Gujarat on January 10, 2017.
The theme of the three day Summit is Vibrant Gujarat: Connecting India to the World
The summit was started in 2003 with the aim to attract investment in Gujarat by the then
state Chief Minister ShriNarendraModi.
PM Modi Inaugurates Several Pre-Summit Events
On the first day of his visit to Gujarat, PM Modi attended several pre-summit events.
PM Modi Lays Foundation Stone for redevelopment of Gandhinagar Railway Station.
On January 9, 2017, Prime Minister NarendraModi laid foundation stone of redevelopment of
Gandhinagar Railway station.
The Railway station will be developed as a modern hub at the cost of about Rs. 250
crore and will be Indias first railway station with all amenities at par with modern
airports.
Prime Minister Inaugurates Indias First International Exchange, India INX
NarendraModi inaugurated Indias first international exchange India INX at
the International Financial Service Centre (IFSC) of GIFT City in Gandhinagar.
India INX is a wholly owned subsidiary of BSE, Bombay Stock Exchange. It would operate
for 22 hours a day allowing international investors and NRIs to trade from anywhere across
the globe.
Prime Minister NarendraModi inaugurates Vibrant Gujarat Global Trade Show
Prime Minister NarendraModi also inaugurated Vibrant Gujarat Global Trade Show organised at
helipad ground in Gandhinagar on January 9, 2017.
Vibrant Gujarat Global Trade Show (VGGTS) 2017 has been organised on an area of
nearly 1,50,000 sq.mt. It was the largest exhibition of the country with 14 themed halls

including Exhibit area covering nearly 1,500 stalls by different companies. Modi took a
round of different pavilions at the trade show and interacted with businessmen.

Nobel Prize Series Exhibition


Prime Minister inaugurated the Nobel Prize Series exhibition at Gujarat Science city near
Ahmedabad on January 9, 2017 . This exhibition featured works of nine Nobel laureates from
across the world who were invited by the Gujarat government to be a part of the Vibrant Summit.
After the inauguration the Prime Minister Modi will also take part in the Roundtable meeting
with all the invited Nobel Prize winners, including India-born Dr.VenkatramanRamakrishnan.
Textile Minister Signs MoUsWorthRs. 8,835 crore
As a part of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, the Union Textiles Minister SmritiIrani addressed
the Make in Gujarat theme seminar on Trends and Innovation impacting the Textile Value
Chain on January 12, 2017.
The minister also witnessed signing of MoUs worth Rs. 8,835 crore in textile sector.
The MoUs were signed in different sectors such as textile parks, textile processing,
machinery, carpet development, etc.
India, Rwanda announces strategic partnership
A joint state was issued between Rwanda President Paul Kagame and Prime Minister
NarendraModi on January 10, 2017 at the Gujarat Global Investors Summit to raise the level of
bilateral cooperation to a strategic partnership.
India extended a $120 million credit to bring over 41,190 hectares of cultivable land under
irrigation in the African country for the development of Export Targeted Irrigated Agriculture
Project.
Besides, Rwanda signed the International Solar Alliance and became the 25th co-signatory of
the Indian initiative.
India also announced a Line of Credit of US $ 80 million to augment Rwandas electricity
production with the commissioning of the 28 MW Hydroelectric Project on the Nyabarongo
River.
India and Rwanda exchanged the Memorandum of Understanding on Forensic Sciences by
the Gujarat Forensic Sciences University to support Rwandas National Police in modernising
Forensic investigations.
Gujarat Government Signs MoU Worth 67000 CR. for Ahmedabad-Mumbai Bullet
Train Project
The Gujarat government signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) worth Rs 67,000
crore with the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) during the
Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit on January 12, 2017 for component manufacturing for
the Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train project.

Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2017 Witnesses Signing Over 5,938 MoUs


Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2017 saw as many as 25,578 MoUs signed between various sectors. As

Atos & NASSCOM Collaborates to Set Up NDLM Centre in Gujarat


i. Digital Services firm Atos and NASSCOM Foundation has collaborated on January 11, 2017 to
launch National Digital Literacy Mission (NDLM) centers at Vadodara, Gujarat to conduct
skill development programs in the area of Information Technology.
ii .Under the NDLM Scheme both the firms would work together to impart Digital Literacy to make
people IT literate, so that they can operate digital devices, like mobile phones, tablets among
other electronic devices and send & receive emails and search the internet for information among
other things.

Gujarat Wins Maiden Ranji Trophy Title Against Mumbai


i. Gujarat won its maiden Ranji Trophy title on January 14, 2017 by 5 wickets after beating
Mumbai at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. Man of the Match: Parthiv Patel.
ii. Gujarat scored 47/0 on the final day to create history. This was the highest total run-chase in
Ranji Trophy finals. Earlier, the highest was 310 by Hyderabad vsNawanagar way back in 1937-
38.
iii. With the win Gujarat became the 17th side in the history of domestic cricket to win the
tournament.

Gujarat Current Affairs - February 2017


Gujarat Govt Presents Budget With No New Taxes In Poll Year
i. The BJP Administration in Gujarat presented a main stream budget with overall layout of Rs
1,72,179 crore for 2017-18, which is Rs 20,327 crore more than last year.
ii. This budget comes ahead of Poll is due in the state this year that comes with a slew of welfare
initiatives and no new taxes.
iii. While Presenting Budget Finance Minister Nitin Patel in the Assembly the minister stated that
the state has overall surplus of Rs 239.16 crore while the revenue surplus is estimated at Rs
6,065.60 crore.
iv. As far as Tax is concerned he keeps it with a pause as he did not propose any
increase, especially in the Value Added Tax (VAT), as GST will be implemented shortly.
v. The Minister Kept Agriculture, irrigation and rural development with highest share of 21.88 per
cent in the developmental expenditure, followed by education and sports (21.17 per cent), water

supply, housing and urban development (16.72 per cent) and energy, industry and minerals
(10.42 per cent).
vi. In the backdrop of Demonetization besides keeping Tax rates unchanged he also emphasized
Education sector with allocations this time with Rs 25,000 crore.

Ministry of Urban Development Approves Development of 6 km long Bet DwarkaDarshan


Circuit in Gujarat at a cost of Rs.16.27 cr under HRIDAY
i. As a part of the Central Scheme Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana
(HRIDAY), the Ministry of Urban Development has approved development of 6 km long Bet
DwarkaDarshan Circuit in Gujarat at a cost of Rs.16.27 crore.
ii. The circuit was approved by the HRIDAY National Empowered Committee chaired by Rajiv
Gauba, Secretary (UD) Government of India.
iii. The Circuit will connect the famous Dwarkadish Haveli and Hanuman Dandi, the only
temple housing Hanumanji and his son Makardhwaj, in Dwarka district of Gujarat.
iv. There are two important water bodies along the circuit including RanchodTalav and
Shankhudhar Lake.

Gujarat Assembly Passes COTP Amendment Bill to Ban Hookah Bars


i. The Gujarat Assembly passed the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of
Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and
Distribution)(Gujarat Amendment), Bill, 2017 on February 23, 2017 to put a total ban on all
the hookah bars in the state.
ii. The bill seeks to amend the present Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act-
2003 (COTP) and has replaced the Ordinance passed by Gujarat Government in December
2016 for the same.

Gujarat Assembly Passes COTP Amendment Bill to Ban Hookah Bars


i. The Gujarat Assembly passed the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of
Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and
Distribution)(Gujarat Amendment), Bill, 2017 on February 23, 2017 to put a total ban on all
the hookah bars in the state.
ii. The bill seeks to amend the present Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act-
2003 (COTP) and has replaced the Ordinance passed by Gujarat Government in December
2016 for the same.
iii. Despite restriction, if any hookah bar is found to be operational would be considered as an
offence and subjected to punishment ranging from maximum of Rs. 50,000 fine to jail term of
up to three years.

Gujarat Technological University Sets Up Centre Of Excellence In Automation


Technologies
i. Indias first Centre of Excellence in Automation Technology was inaugurated by
the Gujarat Technological University at its campus at Vishwakarma Government Engineering
College in Ahmedabad on February 3, 2017.
ii. The center has been funded by a German technology major, Bosch Rexroth. The excellence
centre has four laboratories including Pneumatic Lab, Hydraulic Lab, PLC Lab, Robotic &
Mechatronics Lab and Sensor Lab.
iii. The centre was inaugurated by Bosch Rexroth managing director, Hans Bangert jointly by
the Gujarat governments minister of state for higher and technical education,
JayadrathsinhParmar.

Gujarat Become Indias First State to Establishes Cashless System for PDS
i. Gujarat has become the first state in India to establish Cashless system for distribution of
food grain to the beneficiaries under NFSA (National Food Security Act).
ii. The Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Ram Vilas Paswan on
February 8, 2017 appreciated the efforts of the state government which has installed Aadhaar
Enabled Payment System in 17,250 Fair Price Shops (FPS) much before the target of March
31 as decided by the state
iii .The beneficiaries would just need to carry their Aadhaar cards for getting their food grain
in Gujarat. This will help in establishing their identity, stop the leakages of grain at shop level and
eradicate corruption in the Public Distribution System (PDS).

GNFC township becomes Indias first cashless Township


i. Indias first cashless township Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizers and Chemicals (GNFC)
townshipwas inaugurated by Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani on February 13, 2017
ii. Nearly 10,000 residents in GNFC have embraced various digital mode of payments instead of
cash.
iii. In the township, residents are making cashless payments at shopping centres, schools,
colleges, hospital, stadium, laundry and even at tea stalls.

GIFT-City partners with Dubai International Financial Centre


GIFT City has signed a pact with Dubai International Financial Centre for exchanging views
and expertise in the fields of banking and financial services as well as regulatory practices on

Gujarat Assembly passes Gujarat Animal Preservation (Amendment) Bill, 2017


i. On 31st March 2017, Gujarat State Assembly passed Gujarat Animal Preservation
(Amendment) Bill, 2017 that amends the existing Gujarat Animal Preservation Act, 1954.
ii. This amendment bill was passed unopposed as the opposition party members were not
present. The Speaker had suspended Congress party member for obstructing the proceedings of
the house.
iii. This amendment bill is aimed at adopting stringent measure for stopping illegal slaughter of
animals protected by the law.

PM Modi Inaugurates Petrochemicals Complex at Dahej & Extradosed Bridge Across


River Narmada at Bharuch in Gujarat
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on a two day visit to his native state Gujarat from March 7-8,
2017.

During his visit to Gujarat, PM Modi dedicated a 4-lane 1.4-kilometre Extradosed Cable-
Stayed Bridge over the river Narmada in Bharuch. It is considered as the longest bridge of
India.

Renowned Gujarati Writer Tarak Mehta Dies at 87


i. Noted Indian columnist, humorist, writer and playwright, Taarak Mehta, died on March 1,
2017 at the age of 87.
ii. He was mostly known for the popular column Duniya Ne Undha Chasma in Gujarati
magazine. He started writing this column for Chitralekha in 1971.
iii. The popular Hindi TV show, Tarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashma, is based on this column.
Gujarati poet Chinu Modi passes away
i. Noted Gujarati poet, novelist, story-writer and critic, Chinu Modi passed away in
Ahmedabad,Gujarat on March 20, 2017. He was 78.
ii. Chinu is also known by his pen name 'Irshad'. He started hotel poetry club where he used to
encourage young friends to read, write and to critique
iii. He also the chairman of Kriti Film Cooperative Society since 1979.
iv. He has written both metrical and non-metrical form of poetry. His main contribution
towards ghazal poetry.

PM launches GNFC's cashless/less cash township model across 12 States
On April 14, 2017, during his Nagpur visit, PM Narendra Modi launched a less - cash township
model, developed by Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizers and Chemicals Ltd (GNFC), across
81 townships in 12 States.
The less-cash model across the States has been facilitated by GNFC under the auspices
of NITI Aayog. It is to be noted that GNFCs township at Bharuch in Gujarat became
Indias first 100 per cent cashless township.

Ahmedabad is going to host biggest International Yoga Day event on 21st June.
i. The event will include the participation of 5 Lakh people.

Amit Shah.
iii. It would be jointly hosted by the citys GMDC and AES grounds.

Prabhu Flags Off Ahmedabad-Chennai Humsafar Express


On May 2, 2017, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu flagged-off Western Railways' first
Humsafar Express between Ahmedabad and Chennai at a function held in Udvada town in
Valsad district of Gujarat. Full-fledged operations of the train will start from May 8, 2017 from
Ahmedabad and from May 10, 2017 from Chennai.
i. The first Humsafar Express was introduced on December, 16 2016
between Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh) and Anand Vihar terminal in Delhi.

52nd Annual Meetings of AfDB held in Gujarat


India hosted 52nd Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank (AfDB) from 22nd to
26th May 2017 in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. This is the first time that the Annual Meetings of AfDB
were held in India.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 52nd Annual Meetings of AfDB.
Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of AfDB (comprising Finance Ministers of
countries) and number of official, knowledge, and side events were held from 22nd to
26th May 2017.
Indias Governor to AfDB Arun Jaitley chaired the Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors
of AfDB. Governors of the Bank were from the 54 African regional member countries and 27
non-regional member countries including India.
Heads of State/Government who attended 52nd Annual Meetings of AfDB:
Macky Sall President of Senegal, Patrice Talon President of Republic of Benin, Daniel Kablan
Duncan Vice President of Republic of Cote DIvoire, D.A.S. Hassani Vice President of Union
of Comoros.
The next meeting of AfDB is scheduled to be held in Busan, South Korea in 2018.

Alliance (ISA) Framework Pact. Aaron Cook, Naurus Commerce, Industry and

Corporate Affairs Minister Arun Jaitley on May 22, 2017.
Five more countries sign up to International Solar Alliance
On May 22, 2017, Djibouti, Comoros, Cote dIvoire, Somalia and Ghana signed the
International Solar Alliance (ISA) framework agreement on the sidelines of African Development
Bank (AfDB) meeting in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

Mahatma Gandhi's Sabarmati Ashram Celebrates 100 Years


The centenary of Mahatma Gandhis Sabarmati Ashram in Gujarat has celebrated at the
Nehru Centre on 17th of June.
i. It was celebrated with the screening of a documentary depicting its founding and construction.
ii. Mahatma Gandhi lived in the ashram, situated on the banks of Sabarmati River
in Ahmedabad along with his wife Kasturba from 1917 and 1930.
iii. Gopalkrishna Gandhi will inaugurate two galleries titled 'My Life is My Message' and
'Charkha.'
iv. He will also release two books titled 'Letters to Gandhi' and 'Pioneers of Satyagraha.'

PM attends centenary celebrations of Sabarmati Ashram and launches several projects


Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on a two-day visit to Gujarat on 29th and 30th June 2017.
He attended following events, during the course of this visit:
Centenary celebrations of Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad on 29th June,
2017.Event to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Shrimad Rajchandraji at
Sabarmati Ashram on 29th June, 2017.
Samajik Adhikarita Shivir in Rajkot, wherein PM interacted with Divyang (people
with disabilities). He also distributed aid and devices worth 35 crore to over
18,000 divyang people at a grand function at the Race Course ground, Rajkot on June
29, 2017. This was country's biggest camp in terms of the number of beneficiaries.
On June 29, 2017, at Aaji dam on the outskirts of Rajkot city, PM launched
irrigation & water related initiatives.

On June 30, 2017, PM attended a programme to dedicate water supply schemes based
on Vatrak, Mazum and Meswo Dams at Modasa in Aravalli district in north
Gujarat.

The three-day event is expected to see participation from 2500 international buyers, over

On June 29, 2017, Prime Minister Narendra Modi released coins and a stamp on Mahatma
Gandhi's spiritual guide, Shrimad Rajchandraji, at the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad,
Gujarat.
PM Modi released a commemorative first-day cover and a stamp of Rs 5 and coins of Rs
150 and Rs 10 denominations to mark the 150th birth anniversary of the Jain poet-
thinker, which has coincided with the Sabarmati Ashram's centenary celebrations.
PM inaugurates filling of Aji Dam under Sauni Yojana
On June 29, 2017, Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, inaugurated the filling of Aji Dam near Rajkot
