APP 710: SEL-710 MOTOR

PROTECTION RELAY
Overview
This course is intended for utility and industrial protection engineers and power system
consultants.

In this two-day course, students will explore how to use the SEL-710 Motor Protection
Relay to protect induction motors in an industrial setting. Students will complete in-
depth, hands-on application and settings examples to learn how they can implement
complete motor protection and control.
Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of motor protection application
philosophies, including SELs patented Thermal Model, which is integrated into the SEL-
710 Motor Protection Relay. APP 710 includes real-world motor examples and reduced
voltage and capacitor start applications. In groups of two, students gain hands-on
experience in communicating, setting, commissioning, retrieving reports, and performing
motor control functions by working directly with the SEL-710.

Course Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, students can:

Communicate with the relay front-panel and serial port interfaces
Calculate and apply settings for the thermal model and thermal overload protection
element
Determine motor relay settings to meet varied motor protection requirements and to
maximize motor performance and safety
Retrieve and analyze motor trend reports, start reports, and event reports
Apply methods learned in class to troubleshoot and commission motor protection

Complete CBT 101: Introductions to SEL Relays


OR
Basic familiarity with protective relaying, SELOGIC control equations, front-panel controls,
and the SEL-4000 Relay Test System
Ability to set up relay communications using ACSELERATOR QuickSet SEL-5030 Software

mySELU Training Account


Before registering for your first SEL University course, you must create a mySEL
account. That will automatically create a mySELU training plan. If you do not register
yourself, you will need to contact SELU to have the material added to your mySELU
Training account.

Your mySELU training plan is a record of SELU training you have purchased. When you
purchase an SELU training course, it will be added to your mySELU Training webpage.
From this single location, you can:

Classroom-Based Course Information


Class Times
Unless otherwise specified, classes are conducted from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. each day.

What Is Provided?
When you attend an SEL University classroom-based course, you will receive the
following:

Complimentary lunch and snacks during breaks (For on-demand customers, please note
that your company provides the facility and any refreshments.)
Course manual and a student CD that includes an electronic copy of the course manual
and any supporting materials*
Certificate of completion and the ability to request any applicable CEUs

*Important Note: Students are responsible for taking home the materials they receive
in class. In some cases, these materials can be sizable. If you have concerns about
transporting the manual and would like an estimate of the manual size, please contact
SEL University. Please note that students receive an electronic copy of the materials on
their student CDs. SELU staff will be happy to recycle any materials students do not
want to take with them.

What Should I Bring?


Unless otherwise specified on the course-specific page, please bring the following
item(s) to class: A scientific calculator that is capable of performing computations
involving rectangular and polar coordinates. All classroom-based courses include a
student CD with an electronic copy of the course materials, so if you wish to access this
electronic copy of the materials during class, you will need a laptop with a working CD-
ROM drive, even if it is not listed below or on the course-specific page. As noted earlier,
students have access to an electronic copy of the course materials starting two weeks
prior to the class via their mySELU account.

For APP, COM, PWRS, TST, and SYS courses:

A laptop with a CD-ROM drive and a USB or serial port* and Windows 7 (or newer)
operating system
Any software required by the course, installed and updated (Please see the course-
specific page for any details on software or additional laptop requirements.)

*Note: Please ensure that your laptop does not have any installation blocks before you
come to class. In some cases, you may need to update or install software to participate
in class. If your laptop has only USB ports, please install the SEL USB driver.

eLearning Course Information


Web-Based Training (WBT)
WBT courses provide live, instructor-led training delivered over the web. This allows the
technician or engineer to attend instructor-led training without leaving the office.

Course Times
Unless otherwise stated, classes are typically conducted from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
(PST) on Tuesday and Thursday of the scheduled week.

Course Access
WBTs will be accessible from within your mySELU training page. The link to access the
course is available only when the classroom is actively being used. Typically the room
will be opened 30 minutes prior to the start of class.

Course Homework
Homework will be assigned on Tuesday to be submitted to the instructor before class on
Thursday. Please allow time outside of the scheduled class meetings to complete the
assignments.

Call-In Information
Audio is relayed via teleconference. You will be supplied the required number to call
before the class.

System Requirements
Perform this system test to check that your computer and Internet speed is compatible
with our conferencing software. A test session will be held on the date and time
specified in your confirmation letter.

CEUs
You must complete both days of the course and submit a course evaluation and CEU

Computer-Based Training (CBT)


CBT courses are designed to be self-paced and enable both technicians and engineers
to learn about industry topics from anywhere that has an Internet connection.

Course Access
Courses are available 24/7 online through your mySELU training account. *Once you
have completed a course, you can review the material as often as needed for the
duration of your license term.

Licenses

Corporate: A customer can purchase corporate CBT licenses to use on any corporate
intranet or learning management system (LMS), with an unlimited number of users able to
access the CBT for one year. SELU publishes course files to SCORM or AICC standards,
which are compatible with most LMSs. For additional questions on LMS requirements,
please contact SELU.
Single-User: Single-user licenses allow one user to access the CBT using a web
connection for one year.

Please note: SELU no longer supports CBTs on compact discs (CD). If you have any

Overview
This course is intended for utility engineers and technicians who specify, design,
operate, or maintain utility networks, including utility protection engineers, automation
engineers, integration engineers, and communications engineers.

The international standard IEC 61850 was designed to standardize communications


and integration methods and to support systems built from multivendor intelligent
electronic devices (IEDs) that are networked to perform protection, monitoring,
automation, metering, and control functions. SYS 403 is designed to be interactive and
activity based. During this course, students will work in groups of two to configure and
