FIRST SEMESTER 2017-2018
Course Handout (Part II)
Date: 02/08/2017
In addition to Part I (General Handout for all courses appended to the time table) this portion gives further
specific details regarding the course.

Course No : CE F212

Course Title : Transport Phenomena

Instructor-in-charge : Shibani Khanra Jha

Instructor(s) : Soumya Kar

Course Description
Transport Phenomena is an introductory course which basically covers all the fundamental aspects of fluid
mechanics; especially the classical and well established laws of conservation of mass, energy and momentum
in its most generalized form. This course emphasizes on understanding these governing laws and its
widespread engineering applications. The unified contents of this course will enable the students to tackle the
real life fluid mechanics problems in more comprehensive manner and provide a broader view on the subject.
Also, this course will be helpful to students as a prerequisite for further advanced courses of fluid mechanics
at graduate as well as post graduate levels. Students will be assigned example problems which will expose
them to understand the behavior of fluids under static and dynamic conditions. Also students will be
introduced to few fundamental aspects of computational fluid dynamics.

Scope & Objective

To understand the characteristics of fluid statics as well as fluid dynamics.
To establish laws of conservation of mass, energy and momentum in its most generalized form
To establish the relevant mathematics describing the fundamentals of fluid statics, kinematics and
dynamics.
To understand the concept of system and control volume approach and relation between them.
To understand the basics of fluid mechanics which will be useful in solving application based
problems in practical field
