Teacher: Erin Tafoya School: Algonquin Middle School

Curriculum Area: Science Grade Level: 8th

Anticipatory Set:
Class will begin by giving students a quick overview of the days agenda. Then
students will be reminded that they have a test next Tuesday, and that they still
have an opportunity to grab extra credit that is due the day of the test.

Then before we begin reviewing, students will follow along their directed reading
assignment and we will review some of the multiple choice answers.

Objectives(s)/Purpose:
Students will review concepts related to relative age, absolute age, and fossils by
using Lego pieces to visualize vocabulary and concepts.

E5.3B Describe the process of radioactive decay and explain how radioactive
elements are used to date the rocks that contain them

E5.3D Describe how index fossils can be used to determine time sequence.
Checking for Understanding:
I will explain to students that we will be using the Legos in the lab to review and
visualize our vocabulary. After explaining instructions I will ask students what
questions they may have about the directions.

While students are participating in the activity, I will wander around the room to
check for student understanding of the directions.

Guided Practice/Independent Practice:

Each student will get his or her own Lego set. Students will get a minute to play
around with the set to find out what pieces are available. Then students will be
instructed to put all the pieces back into the set. I will give students a vocabulary
word and they will use the Legos to create a representation of the vocabulary word.
Students will be given some time to create their vocabulary word, and then they will
be instructed to pause.

Students will first share with their table partners what they create, and then I will
open it to the class to share the Lego creations and how this represents the
vocabulary term.

We will repeat the process with more vocabulary from chapter 8.

Assessment:
While students make their Lego creations I will wander around the room and ask
questions as to how their Lego creation represents the vocabulary term.
Once we have finished cleaning up the Legos, students will complete the chapter 8
review in their textbooks. Students will have the weekend to complete the chapter
review and we will check it over as a class Monday.

Closure:
I will remind students that there is a lot of different vocabulary from section one
that they should focus on. I will remind them of good study strategies such as to
start studying over the weekend in small chunks rather than the night before the
test.
