Introduction
T
he institutes of national importance namely the IITs, NITs, IISERs and select
IIITs, dominate the research landscape accounting for as many as 40 places
in the top 100 institutes. These 100 best engineering schools account for
over 21,600 records in Thomson Reuters Web of Science index. Tamil Nadu with 17
entries has the maximum number of institutes in the 100-Best list followed by Uttar
Pradesh at a distant 9. The publication count variance annually is 1100-1500 articles
from premier institutes like the established IITs to about 35-70 from institutes that
lie in the 80-100 rank bracket. The new IITs like Indore, Ropar and Hyderabad are giv-
ing a close fight while the private universities such as VIT, Thapar, BITS Pilani, SRM,
Amrita, IIIT Hyderabad and Manipal have been aggressively promoting research.
The Methodology
The scholarly productivity assessment of engineering schools in the country was
carried out using conspicuous and crucial Scientometric indicators. Out of over
3500 institutes that offer an undergraduate programme in engineering, the schol-
arly publication data of around 800 were extracted from the Web of Science (WoS)
database produced by Thomson Reuters. This exercise was carried out on the WoS
version that comprised Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-EXPANDED), and as-
sociated citation index that included the Conference Proceeding, Book Citation In-

dex Science (BKCI-S), Book Citation Index Social Sciences & Humanities (BKCI-
SSH), Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI), Chemical Indexes comprising Current
Chemical Reactions (CCR-EXPANDED) and so on.
The data collected for ranking was restricted to three years (2013-2015). The Scien-
tometric indicators for the study included total articles in these three years, average
number of articles per year, total citations received by these articles, average cita-
tion per article and h-index. The h-index is one of the popular measures of perfor-
mance of an individual or institute. In simple terms, it is an entity with an index of n
that has published n number of articles which is cited at least n times.
SEARCH STRATEGY
For the assessment, records were searched using the following three approaches:
First, the Organizations - Enhanced Field search string was used. Here, the popu-
lar or productive institutes (organization) name and/or their name variants were
grouped in one place and a search on the preferred organization name returned all
records. In the second approach, lesser known institutes (or institutes the names
of which are not been stored in the WoS database) were searched using their name
in partial of full in the address field. In the address fields the names are entered
in abbreviated form (e.g. Univ for University, Inst for Institute and so on). Finally,
the search string was used for those institutes which are not fully engineering in-
stitutes but have a department of engineering or technology. The records are ex-
tracted only from keying in the engineering department of the university/institute.
The search string for instance used was: AD=((Engn OR Tech OR Biotechnol) AND
IP Search
Intellectual property (IP) stock of the institutes in terms of already granted patents
and patent applied in the patent office was searched from Indian Patent Office (IPO)
official websites. For the Granted Patents, IP Stock at IPO till date was searched by
placing institutes name in the following search fields Name of Grantee OR Appli-
cant Address OR Inventor Address. For Patent Applications, IP filed between 2010
and 2015 at IPO was searched by putting the institutes name in the following search
boxes Applicants Name OR Inventors Name OR Inventors Address. Often, the data
in the IPO is not updated. Hence it is possible that patent applications and granted
patents number may differ.
