Rizal in Santo Tomas

Reason Rizal didnt enjoy in Santo Tomas:

1. Hostility of Dominican Professor to him
2. Racial discrimination against Filipino Students.
3. Dissatisfaction with the method of instruction.

Vocational Courses in Ateneo:

Finishes Surveying course in Ateneo (1878).

During his term inUniversity of Santo Tomas (1877 78, Rizal also studied in Ateneo,
hetook the vocational course leading to a title of
porito agrimensor
(expert surveyor)). In those days it should be remembered, thecollege for boys in Manila
offered vocational courses in agriculture,commerce, mechanics and surveying.

Students Secret Society in UST

1880: Rizal founded Companerismo (Comradeship), a secret society of Filipino UST
students. The members were called Companions of Jehu.

He was the chief of the society.

His cousin, Galicano Apacible was the secretary.

Racial Discrimination in UST

Spanish Students called the Filipino Students Indio Chongo in turn Filipino students
called the Spanish Students Kastila Bangus.

The Council of the Gods (1880)

 Another literary contest by the Artistic-Literary Lyceum to commemorate the fourth
centennial of the death of Cervantes, Spanish and author of Don Quixote.

Rizal submitted an allegorical drama, El Consejo de los Dioses (The Council of the
Gods)

The allegory was based on Greek classics

Rizal was aided by Father Rector of the Ateneo in securing the needed reference
materials

Ironically, his novels (smuggled copies) inspired such a strong sense of national
consciousness that they ignited the Philippine revolution against the Spanish Crown.
Intention of Rizal Jupiter, the Roman chief of the Gods, is planning to give three grandiose
gifts (a golden lyre, trumpet, and a golden crown made of laurels) crafted by Vulcan to a
mortal who did best in literature. Juno, Jupiters wife, suggests Homer, the writer of Iliad.
Meanwhile, Venus, the goddess of beauty, recommends Virgil, author of Aedes. On the
other hand, Minerva (goddess of wisdom) goes for Cervantes, author of Don Quixote.
With this disagreement, the other gods were also supposed to fight but were stopped by
Jupiter by allowing Justice (a goddess not found in the original Roman lineup yet
introduced by Rizal in his allegory) to weigh the circumstances without any bias in her
balance. She weighed the Aedes with the Iliad and found them equal. The same goes
with Don Quixote. With this, Jupiter decided to give the lyre to Virgil, the trumpet to

Reason on why Rizals mother was imprisoned:

Jose Rizal's mother was imprisoned on the basis of false charges. She was accused of
being an accomplice in the poisoning of a woman.
