Sport and Society Syllabus

Course Description:
Sport and society will take real world issues and infuse them into the world of
sports. Books, articles, blogs and movies will be used to jump start discussions
and journals related to a variety of issues that surface and cause controversy in
the sports world. We will explore issues such as youth in sports, scandals in
collegiate sports, spectators and sports, as well as, race, gender, drugs, violence
health and safety in sports (concussion protocol and playing through injuries),
eating disorders in sports, and the roles that they play in sports. Athletes or just
sports fans will walk away from this class with a new respect for sports and how
they fit into the ever-changing dynamic of everyday life.

Objectives:
To relate their understanding of the connection between sport and other
social institutions.
To demonstrate their understanding of inequality and sport.
To understand and relate the how sport fits into society and vice versa.
To understand how deviance exists in sport.
To analyze films related to sports and society.
To explore critically and discuss the influence that societal issues have on
the sports world.

Rotation 7 Violence and Sport
Rotation 8 Drugs and Sport
Rotation 9 Social Media and Sport
Rotation10 Social Class and Sport
Rotation 11 Politics/Religion and Sport
Grading:
1. Participation 100 points per semester
2. Warm-Ups 120 points per semester
3. Journals 80 points per semester

Grading Expanded:

1. Participation
Class and Discussion Participation 50 points per quarter (Examples of positive
participation: Answering as well as asking questions about the lessons and
staying engaged in class discussions and activities) (Examples of negative
participation: Doing homework or chatting with friends) Students begin the
quarter with 50 participation points. Points are subtracted when the above
expectations are not fulfilled.

2. Warm-Ups/Journals
Each lesson begins with a warm-up exercise designed around some aspect of
the lesson - 60 points per quarter (Examples: Free Response Questions, Read
& React, Film Analysis)

3. In-Class Projects/Film Analysis


Students will be required to submit separate journals on concepts covered
throughout the semester 40 points per quarter

Assignments & Make-Up Work:


If you are absent, then it is your responsibility to complete missed warm-ups,
workshops, journals, and obtain class notes.

Electronic Devices:
The use of electronic devices is prohibited in the classroom without the express
permission of the instructor. Laptops are solely permitted when approved by the
teacher.

Honor Code Reminder:


All written assignments are to be completed on an individual basis. As a
reminder offenses under the Honor Code are lying, cheating, stealing, and
plagiarism.
