Dear Madam or Sir,

As a passionate educator, I am interested in applying for a high school teaching position being
oered by your school. I am a graduate of Calvin College as of December 2016 with teaching
endorsements in both chemistry and English. Additionally, my student teaching experience
covered both subjects and provided me the opportunity to work with students of a wide range of
achievement levels. I believe my combination of passions and drive as a young educator mean I
would be a valuable asset to the sta and community of your school.

My student teaching was partially in an honors chemistry class and partially in a senior English
class. The chemistry class was a general chemistry overview, but at an accelerated pace to
challenge students who had excelled in science in their academic careers. It began with basics of
scientic literacy such as measurement, unit conversion, the experimental process and progressed
into studies of chemistry starting with the atom and building to more complex concepts. I strived to
emphasize inquiry-based learning and real-world applications of chemistry. Additionally, the
English class focused on using workshop-based methods to prepare seniors for whatever the next
step was, be it college, the military, or the work force. The skills I strived to teach my students
applied not only to the study of literature or the process of writing, but also to them as people as
they developed professional skills, a sense of just citizenship, and leadership abilities.

I also have experience substitute teaching in many classrooms, but chemistry and English classes
especially are a delight because I have the ability to not only adequately manage a classroom of
students, but also to use my educational background to work with students and improvise helpful
supplements to the lessons left by the permanent teacher. I have also worked/ volunteered as a
chemistry/English sporadically since I was in high school. Through my coursework have prepared
materials for multi-disciplinary classes or units, especially between the disciplines of science and
English. Since schools often need teachers certied in various subjects, this part of my education
uniquely prepares me to engage students in a school community like yours.

It is my goal to utilize my skill set of varied content area knowledge, enthusiasm, and in-depth
communication in order to create a positive classroom environment where both academic growth
is achieved and real-world applications are realized. Your school community seems like a place
