2017-2018 Course Expectations

Teacher: Richard Villanueva Subject: Algebra 1

Grade: 8th Grade Room: 207
Teacher Email: rvillanuev1@interact.ccsd.net
Website: mrvgibson.weebly.com
Course Description and Content:
This one-year course is designed to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to be
prepared for further studies in mathematics. It is intended to increase mathematical fluency in
problem solving, logic, reasoning, and effective communication in the study of patterns, functions, and
algebra. This course builds on the concepts of rational and irrational numbers, data analysis,
probability, geometry, measurement, spatial relationships, patterns, and algebraic concepts.
Instructional practices incorporate integration of diversity awareness including appreciation of all
cultures and their important contributions to society. The use of technology, including calculators and
computer software, is an integral part of this course. This course will fulfill the algebra requirement for
and one of the mathematics credits required for high school graduation.

Course Goals and Performance Benchmarks:

1. To develop the Standards for Mathematical Practice. [CCSS]
2. To extend the properties of exponents to rational exponents and use properties of rational and irrational numbers. [CCSS: N.RN]
3. To reason quantitatively and use units to solve problems. [CCSS: N.Q]
4. To interpret the structure of expressions and write expressions in equivalent forms to solve problems. [CCSS: 8.EE*; A.SSE]
5. To perform arithmetic operations on polynomials. [CCSS: A.APR]
6. To create equations that describe numbers or relationships. [CCSS: A.CED]
7. To understand solving equations as a process of reasoning and explain the reasoning; solve equations and inequalities in one variable;
solve systems of equations; and represent and solve equations and inequalities graphically. [CCSS: 8.EE*; A.REI]
8. To understand the concept of a function and use function notation; interpret functions that arise in applications in terms of the context;
and analyze functions using different representations. [CCSS: 8.F*; F.IF]
9. To build a function that models a relationship between two quantities; and build new functions from existing functions. [CCSS: 8.F*; F.BF]
10. To construct and compare linear, quadratic, and exponential models and solve problems; and interpret expressions for functions in
terms of the situation they model. [CCSS: F.LE]
11. To summarize, represent, and interpret data on a single count or measurement variable; summarize, represent, and interpret data on
two categorical and quantitative variables; and interpret linear models. [CCSS: S.ID]
12. To investigate patterns of association in bivariate data. [CCSS: 8.SP*]
13. To understand congruence and similarity using physical models, transparencies, or geometry software. [CCSS: 8.G*]

80-89% B Formative 40% S = Satisfactory
70-79% C Summative 60% N = Needs Improvement
60-69% D TOTAL 100% U = Unsatisfactory

Attendance is required in order to be successful in class.
Per CCSD REG 5113:Once a student has acquired more than 10 unexcused absences,
a failing grade of F will be given for the semester, and no credit will be given.
Assignments and Homework:
If the assignment is not legible, it will be handed back to the student to revise legibility. Spelling and
grammar should represent students best effort, as these areas will be part of the evaluation of every
assignment. During a test or quiz, talking is considered as cheating and the grade will result in a zero and
no longer able to make up assignments/assessments.
Late Work Policy:
o Missing or Late Work beyond the teachers deadline may be submitted and graded if done so within the instructional unit in which it was assigned. The
grade earned on the late work may be reduced up to 50%. Assignments missed or late due to an excused absence will be accepted without penalty provided
that for each day absent, the student has one day to submit the late work. Should a student miss two days of school, the work will be submitted within two
days of the students return to school. However, any assignment that was due, or at least that was scheduled on the day of an excused absence must be
completed and submitted the first day the student returns to school.
o Make-Up Work/Redos will be worth 80% of the earned score. Within every quarter, assignments are due a week prior.

Expected Student Behaviors: All students will follow the Gibsons Great 8 (See School Website or Student Agenda)
Participation in class activities should be done politely and cooperatively.
Be in class on time and fully prepared to work.
All school regulations will be enforced at all times.
Be reasonable. We are all just people. The way you treat other people is usually the way they will treat you.
You will receive three corridor/bathroom passes per quarter. Decided to save these passes will result in extra credit.
Talking during class will not be tolerated except during group activities and homework time. An atmosphere of respect will exist at all times.
Students should feel free to come for extra help after school. Faculty meetings, parent conferences, athletics, etc. may be scheduled
concurrently. Students may not attend if they do not pay attention in class.
