8 Grade Civics and Economics
2017-2018

In this years 8th Grade Civics and Economics class students will participate in a virtual classroom
economy where they will learn valuable skills in money management, United States economic and fiscal
policy, and self discipline. Throughout the school year students will have opportunities to earn and
spend class cash and practice responsible behavior and spending. Details regarding our classroom
economy system are as follows:

a. Earning Class Cash


1. Each student receives $5 worth of class cash at the beginning of the school year.
2. Each Student receives 3 bathroom/locker passes at the start of each semester.
Passes are to be collected by the teacher when redeemed.
Once passes are used or lost the teacher will charge a given price (of class cash) to
exit the room.
*Students will not be charged if they are called to the office, go to the nurse, go to the
library, or in cases of emergency (at the teachers discretion).
Students must sign in and out of the room upon leaving and returning. Students must
include a time and destination when signing the attendance log.
3. Students may earn class cash in a variety of ways (all payment prices are subject to change
at the teachers discretion):
Outstanding featured work displayed on the bulletin board = $1
Parent/guardian signatures =$1
On task behavior (at the teachers discretion) =$1
Turing in work on time =$1
New Student Sponsorship =$5

o An established student can volunteer to help a new student get started in our
class! A volunteer can help our new student get up to date on ISNs, the weekly
agenda, classroom procedures, and any other pertinent information crucial to our
class at that time.
o *The teacher will double check to ensure that new students are given accurate
and appropriate information regarding our class.
4. Absent Student Pack = $2
A student can volunteer to create and absent work pack for an absent student(s) that
contains the daily objective and agenda, as well as all worksheets, handouts, bellwork,
reading materials, and directions necessary for that day.
The teacher will double check to ensure that all contents of the pack are accurate and it
will be placed in one of the While You Were Out baskets.
5. Paying Taxes =$1 per actual dollar spent
Students may donate much needed classroom supplies with a receipt showing the actual
dollar amount that was spent on the products. Students will receive a tax refund of $1
worth of Class Cash for each actual dollar that was spent.
6. Classroom Jobs =$varies$
Students may choose from a variety of classroom jobs from the jobs basket to be
completed at an appropriate time during class (at the teachers discretion).
Jobs include, but are not limited to:
o Cleaning up the room and removing trash
o Organizing bookcases
o Straightening desks and chairs
o Absent Student Work Packs
o Collecting classwork
o Passing work back
o Adding items to bulletin boards
Job cards are to be returned to the basket upon completion. If it is not returned, that
job will not be available until it reappears.
Each job varies in payment price.
Students must get teacher permission prior to completing the job as it may not be
necessary work at that time.

b. Spending Class Cash
1. Students may use their Class Cash to purchase items and privileges, including but not limited
to:
Bathroom/locker trips
Candy
Pens/pencils/other supplies
Music pass (permission to listen to music on mobile device during independent work time
at the teachers discretion)
Seat pass (permission to sit where student chooses at the teachers discretion)
Homework pass
Lunch with teacher
c. Fines
1. Just as in the real world, where people can earn and spend money, they can also me fined.
Students can also be fined in our Classroom Economy System. Students may be fined for
undesired behavior, which will result in the collection of Class Cash and a potential
administration referral. Students may receive class fines for the follow behaviors (this list
is not exhaustive):
Off task behavior
Out of seat
Talking out of turn
Disrespect
Fighting
Offensive language, including shut-up
Unauthorized cell phone usage
Not working
Littering
Bathroom/locker trips without a pass
Unpreparedness
o To avoid this fine, students may purchase or rent some class supplies, such as
pencils and pens.

o Students will be charged a rental fee to borrow pens/pencils. If the borrowed
item is not returned, the student will owe the rental fee and the purchase price.
Students will have one day to pay to pay their fine to avoid administrative
referral.

d. Other Policies
1. Students may loan Class Cash to other students, however, this act is at their discretion and at
NO time will the teacher intervene with this practice.
2. Students are responsible for their own Class Cash. The teacher will NOT be held responsible
for lost or stolen Class Cash.
3. Except in the cases of Class Jobs, parent/guardian signatures, donated supplies, and displayed
student work, Class Cash will be earned randomly; think of this as a pay bonus! Students must always
be on their toes and doing their best for the opportunity to earn Class Cash.
4. The teacher reserves the right to act as the Federal Reserve in our Classroom Economy
System. The teacher reserves the right to determine the flow of Class Cash based on the
supply and demand and inflation of our class.
5. Counterfeiting or attempting to counterfeit Class Cash will result in immediate market
shutdown and administrative referral.

e. Class Cash Prices, Fines, & Dividends *All payments are at the teachers discretion and are subject to
change according to the demands of the market.
1. Each student receives $5 at the beginning of the year and 3 bathroom/locker passes per
semester (6 total).
2. Students may earn cash by:
$1 Requested Parent/Guardian Signatures
$1 Excellent/displayed student work
$1 per $1 spent on classroom supplies (tax refund!)
$2 Absent Student Pack
$5 New Student Sponsorship
$1 On task behavior
$1 Turning work in on time
$$ Class jobs
*All payments will be rewarded at random and should not be expected at each occurrence

3. Students may be fined for:
$2 Unauthorized cell phone usage
$2 for bathroom/locker trips passes are all used
$1 Pencil/pen rental fee
$2 Purchase pencil or pen
$1 Purchase two sheets of paper
$2 Offensive language/cursing
$1 saying shut up
$1 off-task behavior (per offense)
$1 littering
4. Students may spend Class Cash:
$2 Purchase pen/pencils
$1 Purchase cap erasers
$1 Purchase 1 piece of candy
$1 for 2 sheets of paper
$3 Music Pass
$10 Seat Pass
$25 Lunch with the teacher
$30 Homework Pass

The goal of our Classroom Economy System is to promote desired behavior and manage the less
desirable behaviors of students effectively and fairly. Additionally, this system will introduce
students to the workings of our countrys economic system, as well as promote responsibility, money
management skills, and wise spending.
