Method Statement

Pipes shall be stored on a plain ground either in the wooden timbers or on sand
mounds with adequate chokes to prevent from movements.
From the lay- down area to the trench site, it shall be transported through trailers.
Prior to unloading of pipes from trailers, all items shall be inspected for any visual /
transportation damages.
Care shall be taken to prevent pipes from rolling or falling from flat bed trailer and
this shall be attained by using proper supports, chocks.
Spigot end has to be properly secured for not to have any damage and direct
contact with moisture.
Special care has to be taken to prevent any damage on liner of the pipe.
The rubber gaskets received along the pipes and fittings shall be stored in shelter
with original packing until it is used at site.
The supplied lubricant is special vegetable soap (free from grease and petroleum
products). Only the supplied lubricant shall be used.
Extra care shall be taken to ensure that all materials are not damaged during
transport.

Site Planning

To work as a team that support site management plan, construction of access

road and coordination with different contractors and utility department.
Plan of routes as per safety routine schedule, communication on site by means
of mobile, telephone, etc. Lay down area designed to stock different materials.
Before starting the installation, coordinates and elevation of the center line of the
bedding shall be established as per the latest revised IFC drawing inside the
trench construction area as a reference points.

Trench Excavation:

Rev 1, May 2015 Page 4

Document Type

Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu

Method Statement

Prior to trench excavation, a permit to excavate by a competent person must be

made.
All existing underground utilities must be checked prior to start excavation.
The width of excavation shall be made minimum to comfortably contain the space
of worker standing on either side or sufficient to work.
The side slope of trenches shall be at the angle of repose of the excavated
material.
Shall be ensuring that all the excavation is safe to work around throughout
construction activities until backfilled.
Excavated material to be placed at safe distance from the edge of the excavation.
Ladders access to trench must be secured at their highest point.
The necessary service access with slope shall be provided as required.
The trench width shall be extending to minimum half of the pipe diameter at each
side.
If the excavation area is deeper than 1.2 meter it shall be step by steps, two or
more steps.
Trench De-Watering (If Required):
In case of high ground water table, adequate dewatering shall be requiring through
suction pumps or well-point system depending on the ground water condition.
If excavations last more than 24 hrs, hard barricades must be provided 1.8mtr from
edge of excavation.
Maintain groundwater level at least 500 mm of below excavation.

Pipe Laying Procedure:

Position the crane (If it is needed) near the trench (safe distance).
Unload the pipe and lower into the trench.
Ensure no sand/debris go inside the pipes.
Make sure that the bedding is mechanically compacted and tested prior to pipe
laying as per the requirements.(RC Hold Point)
After placing the first pipe, bring the second pipe near the pipe earlier placed and
install it with clamps, chain blocks/pullers.
Once the pipe is fixed in the coupling, check the alignment and move to other joint.
Keep continue this way and ensure for the entire line.
Release the pipe from the crane, remove the slings and clamps.

Method Statement

Work Methodology :
(Manufacturer recommended procedure attached, and shall be followed.)

The manufacturer / supplier provide sufficient lubricant with each delivery of

couplings and pipes.
Thoroughly clean double bell coupling grooves and rubber gasket rings to make
sure no dirt or oil is present.
Insert the gasket into the groove .
Do not use any lubricant in the groove or on the gasket at this stage of
assembly.
Water shall be used to moisten the gasket and groove to ease positioning and
insertion of the gasket. With uniform pressure, push each loop of the rubber
gasket into the gasket groove.
Apply a thin layer of lubricant to the rubber gasket. As per manufacturer for
normal amount of lubricant consumed per joint.
Clean thoroughly the pipe spigots to remove any dirt, grit, grease, etc.
Inspect spigot sealing surface for possible damage.
Apply a thin layer of lubricant to the spigots from the end of the pipe to the black
alignments stripe.
After lubricating take care to keep the coupling and spigots clean.
Make sure the pipe spigot is resting at least 100 mm above the ground surface to
keep away from dirt.
Push the coupling on to the pipe spigot end manually and place smooth shape
timber across the coupling. Uses two come-along jacks connected between the
timber and clamp and pull the coupling into position until the spigot touches the
center register.
Clamp contact with the pipe shall be padded or protected to prevent damage to
the pipe.
Nylon slings or smooth rope shall be used and extra care must be taken in the
alignment of the coupling.
Come-along jacks are placed one on each side of the pipe and connected to the
clamps.
The spigot ends and pipe are to be protected from any damage.
Line end should be covered properly and secured.

Method Statement

Preparation prior to Testing:

Prior to testing, underground piping shall be partially back filled to the required
height with all joints exposed during the Gravity test to detect any possible
leakage.
Flushing should be done to remove all debris and dust inside the pipe before
starting test.
All pipes end must be sealed off with test plug or blind flange.

Test Procedure (Gravity)

Necessary precautions shall be taken for the safety of personnel during testing
operation.
Testing shall be carried out on each section of storm drainage between
Successive catch basin.
Cracked or defective pipes, fittings, and valves shall be removed and replaced
with sound material until satisfactory
Plug all openings below the highest vent stack.
Repair leaks encountered.
Maintaining and fill the line 3 m above top of the pipe at upper end of the pipe
line, but not more than 6m head at the low end by means of a stand pipe.
A period of 4 hour should be allow for absorption,
The loose of water over a period of 30min shall be measured by adding water
from a measuring vessel at regular intervals of 10 min and logging the quantity
of water required to maintain the original levels in the standpipe.
Leakage shall not exceed 0.06 L/h/100 m/mm of 300mm nominal diameter or
less.
Leakage shall not exceed 0.12 L/h/100/m/mm of 300 mm nominal diameter or
greater.
Joints showing any visible leakage shall be replaced or remade as necessary.

AFTER TEST REQUIREMENTS

Draining shall be done on the downstream side. All vents shall be opened before
draining to facilitate drainage and to prevent formation of a vacuum. No test fluid shall
remain in low spots
The test fluid shall be disposed as directed by the Royal Commission.
All temporary items installed for testing purposes (e.g. blinds, spacers and supports)
shall be removed.
Items that were removed from testing shall be re-installed.
Items, such as instrument air tubing, check valve discs which were disconnected before
testing shall be reconnected.
Isolation valves closed for the test purposes and that are required to be in the
open position for process reason shall be opened. If the valve cavity has a
drain, the cavity shall be drained.

The backfilling should be compacted to 90% max dry density as per RC spec.
No. -02315 and contract drawing 692-320-20TR-CE-211.
Sand shall be used for backfilling free of any contamination.
