Frostburg State University Intern -- Stacey Rice

Form 002
Administration and Supervision
Self-Assessment of Final Practicum
Your internship has been a total experience that included not only yourself, but also all of the staff, administration,
students, parents, and community members who participated in some way in projects of your implementation. Also,
you might consider all of the individuals you were required to deal with as you conducted the internship duties and
responsibilities. For example, discipline problems would normally involve students, teachers, and parents at a
minimum. As you attended to such discipline problems, you would be engaged in trying to facilitate among the
needs of all individuals. Given this back-drop, provide answers to the following questions regarding your internship
practicum experience.

1. Was your internship effective? Did it meet all of the goals and objectives as stated in your Planning Guide?
In answering this question fully, consider the use of such instrumentation as:
a. Pre- and post-surveys to determine outcomes of staff development training
b. Observation checklists to determine if students were behaving in the ways expected by the school
and the community
c. Interview schedules to determine parent and community opinions about the need for a change or
the impact of a change
d. Data from standardized tests and measures to determine how well students have learned over a
given period of time in given subject areas.

I feel that acting as an administrator for the Summer School Program was a wonderful way to
develop and learn skills necessary for an administrator. I was able to experience what the
principal does on a daily basis while I was emerged for the three weeks. The planning and
implementing of the summer school program was a great experience. Working with
colleagues, organizing materials, and using a budget was a great way to experience the job of
an administrator.

2. Did your internship projects meet the specific needs of all of the individuals who participated? Where
Question #1 focuses on the project goals and objectives of your internship, this question focuses on the needs
of individual participants. How well do you believe individual participants needs were met throughout your
internship?
I feel that this experience was tailor-made to my needs. I was able to select standards that I
felt were areas of growth as well as complete tasks that I felt comfortable doing. It was very
meaningful to be able to work on my individual needs to strengthen my skills as an educator
and develop my skills as an administrator.
3. Did your internship help to bring about meaningful organizational change in your school building? Many
times internship projects are designed to facilitate the development and implementation of new programs
either for the delivery of instructional services to students of to help in the management of the organization.
Did your internship facilitate such conditions at the building level? One important way to determine the
answer to this question is to investigate whether or not your internship projects had an impact on the
buildings mission and /or vision statements regarding schooling. Was learning positively affected by your
work?

My internship did impact the buildings mission and vision because it is the countys
expectations that by third grade all students will be reading on grade level. By having students
come to a three-week summer school program allowed the students to develop skills and
prepare them for the school year. Many students that attend summer school get a head start to
the students that didnt attend summer school. Summer school is designed to be fun with
meaningful instruction. The students are always motivated to attend summer school and it
prepares them for the school year.

4. Did your internship help to bring about meaningful organizational change in the school district? There have
been times when an internship project has been piloted at a building site with the intention that, if judged to
be effective, the district or the division would have considered adapting it at other sites. In this way a pilot
project could have an impact on the organizational change of an entire district or division. How close did
your internship come to enjoying such an impact on the district or division? In refining your answer to this
question with an interest of establishing a broader base t it, consider reviewing the districts or the divisions
mission statement or board of education annual reports on their goals to the community.

Washington County already has a summer school program at many elementary schools. It is
believed that providing summer school instruction to struggling students allows for these
students to get a jump start to the school year. The program at Maugansville is also able to
provide free breakfast and lunch to each student. This helps the students with getting two
meals and some solid instruction in a small non-threatening environment. The students that
attended hopefully will be able to grow this school year and show growth.

5. Did your internship experience provide project participants an opportunity to have input on the overall
assessment of the experience? Did you give staff members, parents, students, and community members an
opportunity to let you know how they think your internship affected the district or the division, the building,
and the instructional programs?

I believe that the participants had a wonderful opportunity to have input. I trusted the five
teachers to create and design instruction that would meet the needs of the students. They
created goals for each group to help show growth from the beginning of the summer program
to the end of the summer school program. I gave a survey to the staff members as well as the
students to see how the summer school experience went to collect data for the following
school year. I also asked for assistance from other summer school teachers that have assisted
in running the summer school program in years past.
6. Identify your efforts to bring members of different groups together to work on achieving similar goals and
objectives.

Each of the teachers and aide were from different grade levels and sometimes were teaching
outside their comfort zone. Some teachers that were originally ELA teachers were teaching
math during summer school. I motivated the staff with a relaxed and flexible environment. I
knew that these teachers were working hard and teaching students rigorous lessons that met
the theme of Summer School. The staff knew that I was available to give assistance and ideas
where necessary.

7. Identify strategies used to engage members from different constituents in the project work. Examples of such
constituents include but are not limited to these: parents, senior citizens, and local government figures.

The only strategy that I utilized was telling parents about their childs day during summer
school during pick-up. I was hoping if they heard something positive it would motivate them
to bring their child back the following day. We also made summer school extra fun with
getting to take home projects and earning prizes in hopes of motivating the students to want to
come back also.

8. Name or identify types of planning strategies utilized in your project work.

I incorporated many planning strategies to create the summer school program. I asked past
teachers that assisted in running the program so I knew what they did last year. I organized
schedules, used class lists and looked at data to group students, get teacher feedback, and
ordered supplies. I also organized the star lab and a field trip which included a field day as a
celebration of the last day of summer school. I completed this through the use of
Spreadsheets, Google Docs, emails, and notes.

9. Name or identify ways by which your internship experience might have made it clear to you that local issues
can confront us with barriers to change.

During the summer school experience there wasnt any local issues that created barriers to
change. We continued to work on standards and skills we knew were weaknesses due to the
previous years data. I am curious to see what changes will happen this school year with
having a new U.S. president and a new local superintendent.
