How do schools receive assistance from the central office with obtaining and utilizing
assessment data to impact instruction? How could an administrator improve the use of
assessment data in the school?

I discussed with my principal Erin Wolford and this was her answer;

Dr. Michael and the Executive Leadership Team, including Dr. Bishop and Mr. Semler,
scheduled summer one-on-one meetings with each elementary principal. The discussion
revolved around several data points- student attendance, teacher attendance, PARCC data from
2016, and teacher participation in summer workshops. In addition, we were asked to reflect and
share action plans for improvements. My plan is to share the data with the School Improvement
Team so we can develop the plan, measure growth, and make adjustments, as needed throughout
the year.

I have brainstormed some ways a school administrator could do to improve the use of assessment
data in school.
Teachers know the students the best and looking at just one test doesnt really show the
student as a whole. This is why the teachers should look at the data and see if there are
any anomalies that stand out. In allowing teachers time to look deeply at the data with
grade level teams, I feel that they would be able to know how to differentiate instruction
and know what they need to review and practice so students know the material deeply
and are able to transfer the tasks to other things they may see later in life.
It is a goal for students to be able to transfer the tasks that they are learning. So it would
be necessary for teachers to know the curriculum and how to teach it well. Giving
teachers the opportunity to collaborate for each Module or Marking Period would allow
them to design material that would allow students to learn the material by completing
transfer tasks.
Ensuring that teachers are giving feedback to the students and utilizing formative data to
help drive instruction would also help to increase the data results. This way it would be
hopeful that students would take the PARCC test seriously and would try their best to
complete each problem of the test.
It would also be necessary that the students at the elementary level know how to take the
PARCC test. This doesnt mean teaching to the test, but to make sure they know how to
use the features of the test. The PARCC test is still in its infancy and many students
especially in 3rd and 4th grade dont know how to complete the test on the computer to
show that they know the answer.

I looked at the data of the students that were selected for summer school. At this time
there are currently 35 students enrolled for summer school. I have drafted another letter to send
out to invite additional students as well as remind students that havent turned in the paperwork
yet. Currently, the data reveals that there are many students in the primary grades that have
turned in paperwork. Many of the students have medical needs or Individual Education Plans
(IEP). This is the first year to invite current Pre-K students that would be the upcoming
Kindergarten class. There are currently 25 students in the primary level and only 10 students at
the intermediate level. I am hopeful that after the reminder letter gets sent out and the deadline
extended to turn in the paperwork more students will sign up for the summer program.

To assist with summer school my principal, Erin Wolford wanted me to look at MAP data and
distribute the information to the summer school teachers so they could better plan to meet the
needs of the students since there was only twelve days of instruction.

After looking at the data for the upcoming 2nd grade to 5th grade students there seems to
be a trend. The students that spend the least amount of time taking the MAP assessment are the
students that have the lowest scores. This is always something that each grade level tries to
incorporate incentives for students to try their hardest and take their time. It is a challenge to get
students to take the test seriously and do their best. It would be vital to find a way for the
students to slow down and think about each questions. Many students that are taking the math
assessment dont even use the scratch paper to show the work for each problem.

Michelle is currently working on the overall school data form in order to make classes for next
year. That form has F&P levels, math fact levels, and map data. She has not forwarded this
spreadsheet to me yet. She still had some work to do with some of the grade levels. In
meantime, here is map data for students in grades 1-4 last year. It is organized by grade level, so
you will have to sort through to find the kids you want. Hope this helps!

I have just included a screenshot of the overall data that way no student names will be
displayed in my portfolio.
