SUMMARY

The experiment is conducted to determine the performance characteristic of a steam

plant. The liquid inside the boiler, which is water that is used, is let to boil until the pressure

inside boiler reached about 200kN/m or 2.0 bars, the boiler valve steam valve is opened and the

engine inlet pressure reaches about 0.4 to 0.5 bar. The condenser cooling water is on with a fixed

flow rate, so that the condensate can be obtained and measured. Pull upwards the starting knob

and the engine is started. The heater is on when necessary to keep up the boiler pressure at the

desired level. After the engine is let to run about 10 to 15 minutes so it stabilized, with a various

different of load from 1.0 N to 5.0N is exerted which give the engine more work to do the cycle.

The engine pressure gauge will increase when the load is increase and the engine speed will

decrease. The result is took when the feed pump is not in operation which is the machine will run

at full power about 25 minutes while the water falls from maximum to minimum.

Based on the result, there is a proven that the steam plant can produced a high

quality of water vapor mixture, which is around 98.50349%. From the relationship, there is

significant increment on the power input of the engine when the load is increasing. Thus, we can

conclude that the higher the load, the higher the power output from the engine. This direct

relationship also linked to the boiler, Rankine and thermal efficiency which the higher the load,

the better the efficiency.

CONCLUSIONS

As for conclusion, the boiler that heats the water produce steam and the steam hits the

wall of the boiler tank that will increase the pressure of the tank. When the temperature of the

boiler increase, the boiler pressure gauge will also increase because the steam inside the boiler

becomes more and more saturated. The engine speed depends on the spring load that gives the

engine more work to do the cycle. The engine pressure gauge will increase when the load is

increase and the engine speed will decrease. The flow rate of the condensate will increase when

the engine inlet pressure increase because the pressure will increase the water flow with time.

The thermodynamics principles used in this experiment obey the scale from the steam plant. The

conversion of energy can be seen from heat energy to the kinetic energy when the boiler heat the

water to steam. The steam is than become saturated and increase the pressure inside the tank. The

steam pressure is used to move the engine which means the conversion from kinetic energy to

mechanical energy.

Based on the result, there is a proven that the steam plant can produced a high quality of

water vapor mixture, which is around 98.50349%. From the relationship, there is significant

increment on the power input of the engine when the load is increasing. Thus, we can conclude

that the higher the load, the higher the power output from the engine. This direct relationship also

linked to the boiler, Rankine and thermal efficiency which the higher the load, the better the

efficiency. In addition, the steam plant also can produce a low quality of water vapor mixture,

which is around 68.7112% which is from the relationship, there is significant decreasing on the

power input of the engine when the load is decreasing. Thus, we can conclude that the lower the

load, the lower the power output from the engine. This direct relationship also linked to the

boiler, Rankine and thermal efficiency which the lower the load, the lower the efficiency.
RECOMMENDATIONS

As for recommendation, before starting the experiment, the filter at the suction pipe must

checked and the water inside the reservoir must be half full. This is to prevent from impurities

and the fault in reading. The water level inside the boiler tank must three quarter full so that the

steam have space to collide with each other inside the tank.
