WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE HUMAN?

reason, love, be moral and have free will
WHAT IS HUMAN FREEDOM?
=God created us as intelligent beings with the ability
to control our actions, urges and emotions
BUT FREEDOM IS ROOTED IN FREE WILL
BY FREE WILL, WE SHAPE OUR LIVES
WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT HUMANS?
1. Humans are creations of God
2. God desired humans to exist
3. Whatever we are a gift from God
4. Humans are a mixture of earth and divine breath
5. Humans are the only ones who enter into dialogue
with God
TRANSCENDENCE
1. A particular state or being that is beyond what is
perceived by the senses
2. It speaks about a human persons own journey to
create him/her self. It is about a struggle in actual
life
3. It speaks about the series of confrontation that a
human person has to face and undergo in order
to form himself/herself as a person
4. It is about human growing. It is about going
beyond boundaries and limitations.
5. Human persons have the capacity to extend
beyond themselves.
6. Human existence is never fixed, and we are never
condemned, as if by obligation, to a particular
and limited way.
7. Whoever or whatever we are at the moment is
never a finished product yet.
8. This is precisely the beauty of our human
existence: we have varied possible ways of living
our life and we always have the chance to
mature and grow.
9. No matter how miserable our life may be, we can
still believe for a better tomorrow precisely
because we know that we can work to improve
our future because we are the ones who are truly
responsible or accountable for the kind of life that
we wish for our own.

Historical Account:
Greek Philosophers -viewed man as part of the whole
order of the cosmos.
-Man is just a spectator and must
Medieval Philosophers -stewardship to the
environment, like a feudal lord-tenant relationship
What the bible says about man and his environment
Genesis 2:15
The LORD God took the man and put him in the
Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.
God has instructed man not only to live his life but
become also the stewards of His creation.
We see Him create intentionally and orderly.
He creates for the first three days (day/night;
sky/water; water/land), and fills what He created for
the next 3 days (sun/stars/moon; sea creatures/birds;
animals/mankind).
With each step, we see the Lord create each
according to their kinds.
And with each step, the Lord sees what He made and
declares that it is good.
Environmental philosophy is a branch of philosophy
that is concerned with the natural environment and
humans' place within it.
Branches
1. Environmental ethics -considers extending the
traditional boundaries of ethics from solely
including humans to including the non-human
world
-In this part of environmental
philosophy, people ask the questions we are the
most familiar with, such as, Should we chop down
that tree to make currency? or What things do
we need to preserve for our future generations?
2. Environmental aesthetics- emphasis on merely
aesthetics
3. Ecofeminism - social movement that regards the
oppression of women and nature as
interconnected. It is one of the few movements
and analyses that actually connect two
movements.
4. Environmental theology understanding of Gods
relation to the creation; the earth is perceived to
be valuable to God and therefore man is
expected to use it in a way that would please
God.
