Teachers teach the learners with the objective that 100% of the class will learn. Preparing
updated Daily Lesson Log with appropriate instruction materials are some of the things that
teachers consider to make sure that the lesson will be delivered very well. It is most satisfying
when all learners are present on that day and the days thereafter to ensure maximum learning.
But one of the most frustrating experiences for teachers like me is when learners are absent
Sadly, it is very challenging to achieve perfect attendance. No matter how interesting
and well-prepared my lessons and teaching materials are, there are always students who miss
out on the days activitieswillingly or unwillingly. Just like in the case of my class advisory,
GRADE 11 H.E. II, based on my daily attendance record, almost 35% of my learners are
habitually absent.
According to Merriam-Webster dictionary (2016), absenteeism is "chronic absence." In
the context of school, it is the habitual or intentional failure to attend school.
School absenteeism and tardiness are alarming problem for administrators, teachers,
parents, society in general, and learners in particular. According to Malcolm, Wilson, Davidson
and Kirk (2013) unaccepted absences have a negative effect on peer relationships, which can
cause further absences. Teachers identified the effects of absenteeism on children as:
academic under-achievement.
difficulty in making friends which could lead to boredom and loss of confidence.
prolonged absence can have deleterious effects for the child in later life.
students who are absent from school are at the greatest risk of dropping out of school
early.
Thus, as adviser of H.E. II, I wanted a more accurate analysis of why some of my
students are perennial absentees and tardy, I would like to minimize this problem, if not
eradicate it completely.
