MASA DEPAN GERIATRI DI INDONESIA

Abstract:
Demographically the number of the elderly population in
Indonesia in the last decade and in the near future will increase
tremendously.Kinsella nd Tauber notes that between 1990-2025
the increase in Indonesian elderly population show the highest
presentation among other countries in the world,that is
414%.This figure together with epidemiologic figure absolutely
indicated that Indonesia is urgently needs the geriatric service and
so are the geriatric medicine science as the backbone of the
service.The other reason to encourage the development of
geriatric service are the needs and the the acceptance by some
of the stake-holdersof geriatric service,those are,the patients
and societies, the (medical) proffessionals,and government
authorities (some levels).From the practice shown up to the
moment,it is evident that the needs and acceptance of the
patients and societies of the geriatric service is very
significant.Since year 2000,the Indonesian Medical Association
have acknowledged PERGEMI/ISOMEG as one of its
member.The Central government(medical )authorities) i.e. the
Ministry of Health, due to the demographic and epidemiologic
facts,is mandatorily need the geriatric service,so do the health
authorities at the provinces and regency/city.However it is noted
that some hospital authorities still reluctant in allowing the
right geriatric approach to practicing in their hospitals,either
due to ignorancy or by an irrational aliby that their hospital is
not yet a subspecialistic hospitals.This facts should be addressed
appropriately by the PERGEMI.
