ENGINEERING

DEFINITION:

Engineering is the application of scientific knowledge to solving problems in the real world. While science
(physics, chemistry, biology, etc.) allows us to gain an understanding of the World and the Universe,
Engineering enables this understanding to come to life through problem solving, designing and building
things.

Engineering is a scientific field and job that involves taking our scientific understanding of the natural world
and using it to invent, design, and build things to solve problems and achieve practical goals. This can include
the development of roads, bridges, cars, planes, machines, tools, processes, and/or computers. The things
which engineers develop are called technology. Without that technology, the modern world simply would not
exist.

The American Engineers' Council for Professional Development (ECPD, the predecessor of ABET) has
defined "engineering" as:
The creative application of scientific principles to design or develop structures, machines, apparatus, or
manufacturing processes, or works utilizing them singly or in combination; or to construct or operate the same
with full cognizance of their design; or to forecast their behaviour under specific operating conditions; all as
respects an intended function, economics of operation or safety to life and property.

HISTORY:

Engineering has existed since ancient times as humans devised fundamental inventions such as the wedge,
lever, wheel and pulley. Each of these inventions is essentially consistent with the modern definition of
engineering.
