EXPERIMENT 1

TITLE : NETWORK CABLING

OBJECTIVE : At the end of the experiment, we able to:

i. Making connection with Cat5 cable
ii. Making cross over cable and straight through cable
iii. Testing cable using networking cable tester

APPARATUS : i) Cat 5 cable

ii) Wire cutter
iii) LAN tester
iv) Cable striper
v) Crimping tools

THEORY :

a) STRAIGHT THROUGH CABLE

Straight-through cable is a type of twisted pair copper wire cable for local area network
use for which the RJ-45 connectors at each end have the same pinout. Straight-through cable
is also commonly referred to as patch cable. Straight-through cable is used to connect
computers and other end-user devices (e.g., printers) to networking devices such as hubs and
switches. It can also be used to directly connect like devices (e.g., two hubs or two switches)
if the cable is plugged into an uplink port on one (but not both) of the devices. Crossover
cable is used to connect two like devices without the use of an uplink port.

b) CROSS OVER CABLE

Ethernet crossover cable is a type of Ethernet cable used to connect computing devices
together directly. Normal straight through or patch cables were used to connect from a host
network interface controller (a computer or similar device) to a network switch, hub or router.
A cable with connections that crossover was used to connect two devices of the same type,
two hosts or two switches to each other.

PROCEDURE:

2
1. Cut 2 meter Cat 5 CABLE.

2. Strip 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5.1 cm) of the outer skin at the end of the cable wire by
making a shallow cut in the skin with a utility knife. Run the knife around the cable,
and the jacket should slide off easily. There will be 4 pairs of twisted wires exposed,
each of them a different color or color combination:

a. Orange-white striped and solid orange

b. Green-white striped and solid green
c. Blue-white striped and solid blue
d. Brown-white striped and solid brown

3. Straighten the twisted wires using 2 pair of tweezers. Grasp a wire beneath a bend
with 1 pair of tweezers, and use the other pair to gently straighten the bend. The
straighter your wires, the easier your job will be.

4. Trim the untwisted wires to a suitable length by holding the RJ-45 connector next to
the wires. The insulation on the cable should be just inside the bottom of the RJ-45
connector. The wires should be trimmed so that they line up evenly with the top of the
RJ-45 connector.

5. Arrange wire based on colour code as shown below:

3
a) Straight through cable colour code arrangement

b) Cross over cable colour code arrangement

4
6. Trim all wires evenly. Leave about 1/2" of wires exposed

7. Insert the wires into the RJ-45 connector, make sure that they stay aligned and each color
goes into its appropriate channel.

8. Crimp an RJ-45 connector to the opposite end of the cable using crimping tools

9. Testing cable connection using network cable tester. Put both end of the cable to the
network cable tester and see the sequence led "ON".
