eText/Access Card package, 9/E, ISBN: 9781323476543. The access code comes with a NEW book purchased from
the SJU campus store or can be purchased directly from the publisher (with or without the eText) at
http://www.masteringchemistry.com.
- L. G. Wade Jr , and J. W. Simek, Organic Chemistry, Solutions Manual, 9th Ed., Prentice Hall, 2017, (optional).
- N. Jespersen, Laboratory Manual for General Chemistry and Introduction to General & Organic Chemistry, 12th
Edition, Wiley Publishing.
- V. Cesare et al, Organic Chemistry Experiments Accessed Online - given to you by your 1121L instructor.
- Laboratory Notebook - A bound notebook of at least 100 pages is required. A marble Notebook with either lined
pages or quadrille graph pages will suffice.
- Clicker A Turning Technologies QT Clicker Device, or clicker may be required. Consult with your instructor
BEFORE buying a clicker at the SJU bookstore. Registration instructions will be posted on Blackboard.
- Scientific Calculator This should be able to express numbers in scientific notation (e.g. 6.02 x 1023 ), and it must
have log functions. Such calculators are available for under $20.
The use of Programmable and Graphing Calculators are NOT allowed during Examinations.
GRADING
The total points for the course will be 1000, to be distributed as follows:
Lecture Exams (400 points) There will be three mandatory 90 minute common exams on the evenings of 2/14, 3/14
and 4/18. Your lowest score from these will be dropped. The other two scores will be averaged, and the average
multiplied by 4 to give a score based on 400 points.
Absences from Lecture Exams: NO MAKE-UP EXAM will be given for the first absence from a lecture exam,
except for religious reasons. The missed exam will simply be regarded as your lowest score, and hence will be
dropped. In the extremely rare instance of a second absence, a make-up will be given ONLY upon demonstration
of a compelling reason for both the first and second absences.
Final Exam (200 points) This is a Comprehensive Departmental Examination common to all lecture sections. This
examination covers the entire semesters lecture material.

GRADING (contd).
Recitation (100 points) Your recitation score will be based on the best ten of at least twelve quizzes.
Clickers (50 points) At least once per class, questions will be asked for which you will click in your answer. You get
half credit for being there and half credit for the correct answer. Random roll call will be taken; owners of active clickers
who are not present in that class (i.e. cheaters) will be penalized by one whole grade point (10% of your entire total) for
the entire CHE1120 grade.
CHE 1120 Online Homework (50 points) Completion of these assignments is required and therefore NOT optional.
Note: You are required to complete two sets of online assignments; the WileyPlus (general chemistry) and the
Mastering Chemistry (organic chemistry) assignments. Registration instructions will be posted by your
individual lecture instructor.
Laboratory (200 points) You MUST pass Lab in order to pass the course.

Please note that while every effort has been made to be accurate, all policies, requirements and dates
in this syllabus can be changed, without notice, at the instructor's discretion.

LETTER GRADES
The Chemistry Department has established the policy that you must pass, with a score of 60 or more, at least 2 of the 3
lecture exams or the final exam in order to be eligible to receive a minimum passing grade of D in the course. If you do
meet this minimum requirement, the following point totals are needed to be assured of the corresponding letter grades
in the course. If you do not meet this minimum requirement, you will receive a grade of F regardless of your total points.

Homework Assignment Schedule

The following homework assignment schedule in addition to the practice exercises is intended to prepare you for your
exams. These assigned problems will not be collected or graded, but problems that are challenging may be discussed in
recitation. You are not expected to solve homework problems until the material has been discussed in lectures, but you
are advised to work on these problems as soon as possible after the corresponding topic has been covered; these suggested
problems are representative of typical exam questions; the more problems you can do from chapters, the better!

It has been our experience that students who have not mastered the assigned problems generally do not perform
well in the course.
