Experiment No. 4

INDUCTOR IN AC CIRCUIT

I. Objectives:

The activity aims to investigate the voltage and current relationship in a inductive circuit
with AC applied. This also aims to investigate the effect of frequency to the current and
inductive reactance.

Intended Learning Outcomes(ILOs):

The students shall be able to:

1. Examine the effects of AC on inductive reactance.

2. Determine the effect of frequency on the current and inductive reactance of an

inductive circuit.

3. Verify the phase relationship between voltage and current to a capacitor when AC is
applied.

II. Discussion/ Background of the Experiment/ Concept and Theories

A sine wave voltage has a maximum rate of change at its zero crossings and zero rate of change
at the peaks. From Faradays Law the amount of voltage induced across a coil is directly
proportional to the rate at which the current is changing. Therefore, the coil voltage is maximum
at the zero crossings of the current where the rate of change of the current is the greatest. Also,
the amount of voltage is zero at the peaks of the current where its rate of change is zero. As you
can see, the current peaks occur a quarter cycle after the voltage peaks. Thus, the current lags the
voltage by 90.

IV. Procedure:

2
1. Construct the circuit shown below.

2. Measure the voltage across the 100-mH inductor and the current through it.
VL=_________________
IL=_________________
3. Connect channel 1 of the oscilloscope across points 1 and 2 (i.e. across the 100-mH)
and channel 2 to the 100 resistor.
4. Draw the corresponding waveforms, the voltage across the 100-mH inductor and the
voltage across the 100 resistor. Assume that the voltage across the 100 resistor is
the current; determine the phase relationship between voltage and current in an
inductive circuit.
5. Connect the circuit as shown below. Measure the voltage across the inductor and the
current through it.

6. Repeat procedure 5 by adjusting the frequency to 6kHz, 8kHz, and 10kHz.

7. Plot a graph of inductive reactance against the frequency.
