6-tone Row Paper

For the 6-tone row project, I used the melody of C, A, D#, F, B, and C#. The
numbers for this are: < 0, 9, 3, 6, 11, 1 >. The compositions used on the original
sequence were retrograde, transposing the melody down three half steps, horizontally
inverting it, retrograding the inversion, and finally, using a mixture of compositions to
change the melody.
When calculating the retrograde of the original melody, I simply took the original
set of numbers and stared from the last number and count backwards to the first number.
The new sequence was < 1, 11, 6, 3, 9, 0 >. The transformation that occurred was a
rotation of 180 degrees. My new clock diagram is below:

Between the original diagram and the retrograde diagram, the new one starts on the last
number of the original sequence and goes through the rest of the numbers in reverse,
ending on the first number. However, the intervals are still the same between both
diagrams.
For the Horizontal Inversion, the original number sequence was transposed down
three half steps, changing the sequence from < 0, 9, 3, 6, 11, 1 > to <
3, 6, 0, 3, 8, 2 >. In the composition diagram, the transposition was moved down y= -
3. 3 () = ( 3) was the equation used. Below are the calculations and clock
diagram:
3 (0) = (0 3) = 3 12
3 (9) = (9 3) = 6 12
3 (3) = (3 3) = 0 12
3 (6) = (6 3) = 3 12
3 (11) = (11 3) = 8 12
3 (1) = (1 3) = 2 12

The difference between the original clock diagram and the transposed one is that the
numbers have been moved down three numbers. The intervals have not been changed
between both diagrams.
The inversion of the original sequence was found by using the equation 0 () =
( + 2(0)). From this equation, the new sequence is < 0, 9, 3, 6, 11, 1 >.
The inversion was a reflection over the horizontal axis (or an inversion over 0). The
calculations and clock diagram are:
0 (0) = (0 + 2(0)) = 0 12
0 (9) = (9 + 2(0))=-9 mod 12
0 (3) = (3 + 2(0)) = 3 12
0 (6) = (6 + 2(0)) = 6 12
0 (11) = (11 + 2(0)) = 11 12
0 (1) = (1 + 2(0)) = 1 12

The difference between the horizontally inverted clock diagram and the original is that
the pattern is flipped vertically. The intervals are still the same, though, meaning instead
of starting from 0 and going to 9, it would go to 3. This is still an interval of 6 half steps.
When calculating the retrograde inversion, it was simple to take the horizontal
inversion and retrograde that. This changed it from being < 0, 9, 3, 6, 11, 1 > to
< 1, 11, 6, 3, 9, 0 >. The composition diagram shows the retrograde inversion
to reflect over the x-axis and be rotated 180 degrees. In more mathematical detail:
Original sequence < 0, 9, 3, 6, 11, 1 >
Retrograde < 1, 11, 6, 3, 9, 0 >
0 (1) = (1 + 2(0)) = 1 12
0 (11) = (11 + 2(0)) = 11 12
0 (6) = (6 + 2(0)) = 6 12
0 (3) = (3 + 2(0)) = 3 12
0 (9) = (9 + 2(0)) = 9 12
0 (0) = (0 + 2(0)) = 0 12
Retrograde Inversion < 1, 11, 6, 3, 9, 0 >

The retrograde inversion clock diagram pattern looks exactly like the horizontal inversion
pattern, however, it starts on the last number of the inverted sequence (-1 in sequence, 11
on clock), rather than 0. Compared to the original pattern, the retrograde inversion
pattern looks to be reflected across the y-axis. The intervals were reversed as well.

For the mixture composition, the original sequence was retrograded and inverted
and also transcribed down a half step. This changed the original sequence from <
0, 9, 3, 6, 11, 1 > to < 2, 0, 7, 3, 10, 1 > in the end. In the composition diagram,
the mixture has been reflected over the x-axis and translated up y= 1. Below is how this
sequence came to be:
Original Sequence < 0, 9, 3, 6, 11, 1 >
Retrograde Inversion < 1, 11, 6, 3, 9, 0 >
Transcription down 1 half step < 1 1, 11 1, 6 1, 3 1, 9 1, 0 1 >
= < 2, 0, 7 3, 10, 1 >
For the mixture clock diagram, the pattern has been flipped vertically ad the numbers
have moved back by one half step, showing there to be a minor rotation in the pattern.
All in all, all compositions from retrograde to mixture changed the original
sequence. When notated, the different compositions go as follows:
Retrograde: < C#, B, F#, D#, A, C >
Transposition: < A, F#, C, D#, G#, A# >
Horizontal Inversion: < C, D#, A, F#, C#, B >
Retrograde Inversion: < B, C#, F#, A, D#, C >
Mixture: < A#, C, F, A, D, B >
