Unit 2 Day 5 Factoring

Mastering your Factoring Skills
Previous Lessons:
The first four lessons of the unit we covered the basics of factoring trinomials into two binomials. Three different
methods (decomposition, +/x method & criss-cross method) of factoring were covered and practiced.

Todays Goal:
In this lesson we will quickly review the three methods previously taught and then students will chose one of three
assignments to complete.

The Goal-Orientation Theory was used to design this lesson; and I used three major components of the theory.
1. Mastery Goals the tasks given to the students do not just have one outcome. Both the Factor Bingo and
Puzzle can be completed in a number of different ways. This will hopefully help the students to focus on
their own learning and not compare to others while working.
2. Multi-dimensional Classroom by giving the students choice in the assignment that they complete allows
them to feel more empowered about what they are doing/learning. More students should be able to find
success since the assignments are very open.
3. Future Use these assignments have the opportunity to be used later in the course. I want students to feel
that they are creating something that we can use later. We can play someones Bingo game the next week,
this will hopefully satisfy some of the why are we doing this questions.

Assessment:
START OF LESSON & DURING
I will walk around the room and give personalized feedback.

END OF LESSON
Self Assessment students will grade themselves out of 5 marks (using the classroom rubric) before they hand their
assignment in. This rubric is based on student effort and feelings towards the assignment.

Teacher Assessment I will then also give the students a grade out of 5 marks (using another rubric). This rubric will
be based on completion, methods used to solve and effort.

Board Notes: first 30 minutes of class

Using the following six examples we will review the three methods of factoring we have done the past three days.
The first example from each method we will do together as a class and then the second example I will give you time to
do on your own and ask questions as I walk around the room.

Decomposition: +/x Method: Criss-Cross Method:

3x2 + 9x + 6 x 2 + 2x 80 x 2 16

2x2 x 6 5x 2 2x 3 2x 2 + 7x + 3

Assignment(s):

Students will chose one of the following to complete during the remaining 50-60 minutes of class.

1. Factor Puzzle (see Page 2)

2. Factor Bingo (see Page 3)
3. Complete the Missing Step (Page 74 from text)

Closing Remarks:
Students asked to do self-assessment and hand in their assignments.
Speak to those students who have not finished about why and ask to have done by start of class tomorrow.

Unit 2 Day 5 Factoring
Assignment Option #1: Factor Puzzle

Step One: Cut apart your puzzle pieces. You will end up with 16 squares that should have a
mixture or binomials and trinomials around all four sides.

Step Two: Match the un-factored trinomials with the factored binomials so that all touching sides
are equivalent. You will end up with a NEW 4 x 4 square.

Step Three: Glue your finished square to a new page. Please do you work on a separate page
and hand in along with your square.

*Remember you can use ANY method to factor, if you have a favorite do not be afraid to use it or
even WORK BACKWARDS if you get stumped.

Unit 2 Day 5 Factoring
Assignment Option #2: Factor Bingo

Your job is to create a Factoring Bingo game for your classmates to play. You must create not only
the clues for the game but also five bingo cards that could be used to play the game.

BINGO CLUES:

These clues should be trinomials, and must be able to be factored using at least two of the
methods done in class. A minimum of 25 clues should be created.

BINGO CARDS:

Each of the 24 boxes on each card should contain a binomial, that may be obtained by
factoring the clues created previously.
